So what is the consensus (is there ever one?) concerning this little shock absorber on the right rear side of the engine. Mine is hanging loose like a bad appendix.
Are these things really necessary and do they make a difference in vibration? Can you get the parts without hocking my first born?

Years ago I managed to get one 'fairly' reasonable. It's so long ago that I do not remember how much. The list price is silly (or was, let us know and I'll update the data). See: http://users.adelphia.net/~johnbrown3/parts4.htm
Very likely your damper is still good - only the attachments are missing. In which case I do think it worth while purchasing the parts and re-connecting. As to the whole thing ... Pays your money and takes your choice. _________________ John

Those prices are insane. I have never had one on my two 924s and never saw one on the two parts cars I bought. I say leave it off and if you have to buy motor mounts that are cheaper more often. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

Vince is correct. Though, for some reason, the price of the right side motor mount expecially, seems to be going through the roof. _________________ John

I have one on my 1982 and one was on my 1980... but when I replaced the engine in the 1980 with an older block the mounts were not exactly the same so I did not hook it up. I did not note any difference in the engine vibration feel.
I think they are a waist of money but there has to be a reason Porsche wanted it there. I bet there is a specific rpm that it helps dampen the vibrations... but if you do not remain at that rpm for long periods you will never note it.
That would be my guess. _________________ 1982 924

I don't have one... I don't have anywhere to mount one either...
Either this is because it is right hand drive and my steering column goes through the crossmember hole already, or possibly because it started life as an auto....
