I am the proud owner of a black 1984 924 Targa na Euro-modell. Besides the usual ehm, charateristics as a howling diff/gearbox and leaking Targaroof/tailgate, I have two more serious problems (challenges):
-with a new battery and checked generator the cranking speed is still very slow. I made a new ground wire from de batterychassisground to the cylinderhead, no effect. How to get met starter going?!?!
-at about 2200rpm in 3rd or 4th gear, the engine gets a hickup and starts to "choke". Combined with the drivetrain backlash the whole car then shakes. What could be the cause of this problem. Settings to lean (CO), AAV/CAV not correct. The idle is also sometimes littel too high, 1100rpm, could this be one problem?
Thanks for the help.

I was going to leave this one for an NA owner with the same experience, but....
The wiring from battery to starter can go bad, resulting in limited current flow to the starter. Look here - http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=3829&highlight=starter+wire+harness
It might instead just be an oxidized connection somewhere, so check that first at the battery posts and connections at the starter.
Try a jump start after cleaning the connections. If that speeds up the cranking, the new battery might not be as good as you have the right to expect. If that doesn't speed it up, then there's a good chance that the battery-starter wiring harness is bad.
Another possibility is the starter solenoid - if the high current switch part of that is rusted, that could conceivably limit current flow and slow the starter too.
Another thought, but I'm not sure how likely this is... If oil gets on, then into the starter motor, that could lead to it getting gunked with oil, sludge, dirt, etc.
Lastly, and again not being an NA owner I don't know how likely this is, but I'm thinking possible heat damage to the starter due to its location.? _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."
