Hi Everybody,

Myself and my 1983 924 are experiencing a loss of power,
When driving it felt as if l was running out of gears,
l accelerated in a gear beyond its ability to move the car.

I felt after a certain acceleration the gears may not have been conecting to the clutch, felt weird. It struggled on a very steep hill.

The exhaust was blowing and it seems one of the bolts holding the exhaust manifold to the engine isnt.

Is the exhaust manifold problem likely to be the source of the cars power loss?

And, if so, is it possible to disconnect the exhaust manifold without talking the head off?

Am l just looking in the wrong direction?

George

Your power lost is not likely to be exhaust related.

If I understand you, your clutch may be slipping.

Did the engine RPM go up without an increase of speed? Or did the engine not increase in RPM?

If the RPM increase without an increase in speed then the clutch is slipping.

If the RPM doesn't want to increase either then check the exhaust manifold if one of the bolts fell out the gasket may have come loose and slide and is now blocking the exhaust port which would cause a loss in power. DAMHIKT

The exhaust manifold can be removed without removing the head. Although if any of the bolt holes stripped out then you will likely have to pull the head to repair, it may be possible to do still on the car depending on your experince and what one it is.

I have removed the exhaust manifold from my car, retapped the holes, replaced the studs in the manifold and head without removing the head.
Being RH drive I have the steering shaft to contend with as well.
All the old studs came out easily else I would have had to remove the head.
Takes time and patience but can be done.

Your problem sounds like a clutch.
If the RPM went up but speed didn't then the clutch.

If RPM's didn't go up and it was just loss of power then I'd be looking for ignition, vacuum or fuel system problems.

Hi again everybody,

RPMs go up but no additional traction,

Okay gives me two seperate problems,

Replacing Clutch and

getting into exhaust manifold, its a right tight space in there,
and the steering comes straight through it (rhd).
should prove interesting.

I now have to work for week gives me time to learn to be
a contortionist before l get in there.

Thanks for your valuable input, l will let you know
how it goes.

George

I removed my exhaust this way.
1. remove alternator.
2. lower steering rack and remove shaft. - (just undo 4 long bolts on crossmember to drop rack)
3. Undo drop tube connection and separate
4. Undo 8 nuts and remove manifold
All sounds simple.
Be prepared to lose skin

I agree that it sounds like the clutch. Maybe you're lucky and it only needs adjusting..
