The last four wheel disc conversion that I did on one of my own cars cost me less than $300 including all four corners, new rotors, brake pads, OE caliper hardware, caliper seals, wheel seals, front wheel bearings, and a pair of good used OE gas from struts. Most parts purchased at swapmeets (Automotion, Tweeks, Pomona). A set of 6 X 15 phone dials cost me $240 from IFC, and powder coating cost another $140. Most used parts prices have gone down since then.
The necessary four wheel disc brake parts are auctioned regularly on eBay by numerous Sellers. I have seen corners go for less than $25 each. I have a spare set of Girling front rotors that I bought in the box from an eBay Seller for less that $20. The new OE front brake pads that are in my spares box cost me less than $5 off eBay.
Are the aftermarket rear brake conversion rotors ventilated? Can they take the heat that will be generated stopping your heavier than designed for car? The factory parts are...
The factory parts are also engineered and tested to bolt onto the car without upsetting the brake balance of the car. Can you say that about your aftermarket designed for a VW with a different total weight and weight distribution parts set?
At one time the four wheel disc brake coversion did cost $2000 with a set of $800-$1000 wheels included. The fact of the matter is, the parts are readily available very inexpensively TO ANYBODY WHO IS WILLING to do a little legwork by going to your local salvage yard, picking out/up the parts, then installing new caliper seal kits, and brake pads. At the Pick A Part Salvage Yards around here, you could buy all of the necessary used parts (including calipers, rotors, spindles, wheel hubs, parking brake mechanicsms, parking brake cables, hoses, and rigid lines) for less than $100. The last time I was at Pick A Part, I didn't even bother to look at or take the brakes, because they are getting so common are the salvage yard. More and more 944s are showing up on a regular basis at the Pick A Part salvage yards here, and I am sure that the same situation is occuring everywhere in the U.S. as more and more cars are junked when the timing and balance shaft belts break.
After haven't done any more brake conversions on 924s tha past few years, and I sold off the spare parts that I accumulated (I just can't resist a killer deal when buying parts). There were three sets of parts ranging in completeness from a basic starter set of parts, to a complete turnkey conversion set. Most of the parts sets were sold on eBay for between $200, and $600. The $600 conversion went with everything needed for a complete bolt-in conversion including: a set of 6 X 15 OE basketweave wheels, shipping (250lbs), and rebuilt calipers, ready to install. |

Not too hard, I'd guess.
But the real question is can you afford it _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

O.K., I got myself straightened out the bolt pattern. I assumed that all air cooleds' lug pattern was 4x130. So when i fitted my wheels to my son's bug, I assumed 4x130 bolt pattern. reading back on what endwrench wrote about upgradeding bug brakes, I measured both the 924 and bug. they both were 4x108(drums are stamped with same part #'s and made in w. germany.). when i ordered my parts i used part #'s not application(ie.type 1, type 3, etc.). that is why I got correct parts for the 924(still cheaper at vw suppliers though).
with that said wheels for the bug just became expensive. so the bug gets my wheels and a spare set of brake parts. I will be doing the 5 lug conversion( a buddy has a spare set 16" fuchs cheap). _________________ 1982 924 NA 85K owned since 1992

Can you post the pn for front and rear drums?
I might be interested in putting these on my bug to change patterns (if my wife will ever find rims she likes)
Would be nice to stay with factory parts.

the stamp on the rear drums is 1826 (OZ) 83204. (the () is a circle around the OZ. the 924 and bug are front disc, also same part #'s on calipers. when i get a chance i'll get those #'s also. _________________ 1982 924 NA 85K owned since 1992

Yes, A is the model name. Apparently you don't have A's, they are 5-spoke design. _________________ '83 924 2.6 16v Turbo, 470hp

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this forum and i have registered cause i've seen some interesting things on this thread. I've read someone has made rear disc conversion using Peugeot 405 discs and cause i'm living in france, it interests me a lot ( 405 are really common car here ). But pics aren't available any more if someone could post them again or write a guide it will be definitely cool
