Hi guys,
I just signed up as I recently bought a 1980 2.0 porsche 924 over here in the UK, so thought this forum might come in handy! im guessing (from what i read) most on here are from the US and Oz? Many from the UK?
Anyway, my first question (of many!) is regarding bleeding the coolant system. When i bought it about a week ago the header tank was about half full. I drove it around for a few days without any problems, then one day checked the coolant only to see the tank was empty. so i topped it up and began using it again. However that day i left it idling for some time having arrived at my destination and when i turned it off it started throwing water out of the overflow pipe on the header tank!! A LOT of water too. Does this sound like an airlock in the system to you guys?
I've topped it up again and so far so good, however i want to fix it properly tonight with a coolant change and proper bleed. Do i remove the bleed from the top hose then fill the system until water comes out of the bleed hole? the manual mentions filling it until the water in the bleed hole stops bubbling? with the engine running also? does it not just blow water everywhere from the pressure of the water pump?
sorry for all the questions, im just itching to fix this little problem as ive read stories of badly damaged engines due to airlocks - and i've never had a car that requires manual bleeding!

About the cooling fluid:
In the worst case you headgasket is leaking...So the water get into the cylinders and find a way out throw the exhaust. If the car heavy smokes when the engine is hot, than the headgasket is maybe leaking or broken.
You can check easily 3 things to get a image of the cool system:
-With cold engine, remove the coolant filler cap, if their`s any boiling in the tank your headgasket is leaking.
-Pull out the oil dipstick, don`t wipe the oil of the stick, but you take a lighter and put the lighter under the dipstick. So you are actually burning the oil. When you hear a noise, it`s proberly the water in the oil that boils.

Welcome.
Before anything else I'd get a new rad cap.
Do a compression test on all cylinders if the problem persists.
The oil will turn coffee colour if there is water in it.
Or you will lose water (heaps) and overheat regularly if compression gases are getting into the coolant.
If compression is fine then maybe a thermostat.
My hose doesn't have a bleed. Must have been a PO aftermarket add on.
I filled my system with the motor running and just kept adding coolant. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

Welcome, Dan. Where in the UK are you from?
Nice looking car.
A couple of points - you're missing the timing cover on the front of your engine - they can be had on E-bay for about a tenner (+p&p), and I think you ought to change your brake fluid - it looks a little on the dark side.
But otherwise a fine looking example.
I've never had to run the engine to bleed the coolant, but there can be a problem with the thermostat. The cheapo (expensive) crap they sell in Halfords doesn't have a bleed hole in the thermostat base plate which makes it impossible to bleed the coolant (other than by loosening the thermostat housing and letting water piss out there ) _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

Hi Dan,
I had the same problem when I first got my 924 - After driving for a while coolent came out the overflow pipe. Ive think this was due to the engine overheating and letting off pressure.
As for bleeding, remove the red plug, run the engine till bubbles stop coming out the plug hole, replace plug. Simple!

Thanks for the welcomes guys. good to see there's a few 'poms' on here too Kahl thanks for the link, it'll have to wait till home time though as for some reason my works firewall lets me view this board but not the link you gave.
Mike im from bradford, west yorkshire mate also drive a mk2 fiesta XR2 with turbo technics conversion (around 170bhp) so the porsche was 'meant' to be a runaround whilst i work on that lol.
Since i posted this I made some discoveries as seen in below topic:

I'm now thinking this is possibly head gasket related as the 2 problems would tie together nicely. only thing is, my dip stick looks fine, no mayo/coffee.

Thinking of a turbo conversion on the Porsche...?

| As well as the 924 owners club uk link youve been given (nice bunch of guys when i met up with them.) Theres also the pcgb(never dealt with them (too expensive and from what ive heard a little uptight), and tipec (with indepependantly run but associated forum at www.porsche-1.net ). The tipec club is around 20% 924s from what i was told by club committee and was originally set up as a 924 club but branched out to everything as people diversified garages. The p1 forums definatly worth a look as a nice place to chat, but this is the place to be for any technical problems and suggestions as far as im concerned. |
