Here is the dumb question of the day. How do you open the hood on a 82' 931?
Before you answer though.. the hood release latch is broken. The cable doesn't feel like it is even connected to anything when you pull on it. The owner of the car said it was probably his brother's fault, but whoever screwed with it detached the cable from its proper positon.
So.. how do i open the hood? _________________ 1986 944 | 1978 924 (FS) | 1982 931 | 1980 931 |

| Try to get at it from under the car. I don't have an answer other than to try somthing "out of the box". |

Check to see which end is disconnected.
If its the lever end, great, if not then you could have some difficulty coming in from the front and underneath. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

Does anyone have a daigram of what hte lever is suposed to look like?
The cable is disconnected from teh lever, but I assumed that if you pulled the cable the hood should open. RIght? _________________ 1986 944 | 1978 924 (FS) | 1982 931 | 1980 931 |

Sounds logical- needs a good bit of pulling though. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

Use vise grips and a wire stripper like this:
Find a hole in your plier type wire stripper that's bigger than the center cable but smaller than the housing and place it against the cable with the center cable coming through the hole. Then use vise grips on the center cable and using both hands push against the wire stripper and pull on the vise grips. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

Well, I wish you luck, but a break in the cable is almost always under the hood. The cables tend to rust at the lowest point inside the insulated sleeve, because water settles there. When the rust gets bad enough, the hood pull will get very hard to operate. Then you pull harder, and it breakes.
I would try locating the cable from underneath the car, where it leaves the firewall, and routes along the top of the frame rail. It has a black rubberized coating. But, be carefull, because the speedometer cable is black also. However, the speedo cable is larger diameter than the hood cable, so find the smaller one. Find what you think is the lowest point, and cut the cable in front of that point, with some heavyduty wirecutters.
Then try the vicegrips to pull the cable to open the hood. It will probably take a very hard pull, but it should work. The replacement cables are relatively cheap, and include a new lever. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo |

If all else fails, apparently you can unbolt the hood latch from underneath, I don't know for certain that you can becuase I was able to pop my hood using the visegrips/pliers method when the cable broke.

Under the hood yesterday and there is a small gap between the top of the radiator and the hood latch.
You may be able to get a lever in there and slide the latch over to release the hood.
You would have to remove the lower valance cover and come up thru there. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA
