How come that the Porsche name has aquired so much mystique and prestige? Looking at the 914 and 924 could easily have been made by VW and the 911 isnt THE ultimate sports car, or even one of the best. So how come that just Porsche is Porsche?
I first come to think of this as I was called 'the guy with the Porsche' at school.. btw I loved it _________________ Why drink and drive when you can smoke and fly?

Yeah, it's cool, huh?
Herr Doktor Porsche became famous for being a brilliant car designer/engineer.
Porsche the marque basically became famous for winning races. With innovative cars.
That and the 356 was light-years ahead of everything else at the time, in terms of style and performance. _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

As the car mechanic/janitor at my school said when I showed it to him. His eyes almost filled with tears and he started studdering, then after a while he said 3 simple words, all he had to say and all he needed to say. Porsche is love. _________________ Why drink and drive when you can smoke and fly?

I think that guy might have some emotional problems..?

I wouldn't necessarily agree with that. It's always been my favourite car, as long as I can remember.
I think the 911 became really famous as a "supercar" when the Turbo was released. I can only imagine what people thought of that thing at the time It must've been unbelievably powerful and fast!
The 911 was always famous for winning races, too. Just like the 356 and the pure race cars that were developed alongside them.
There's that famous saying, "Win on Sunday, sell on Monday." _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

Hello Eric,
go to internet, www.google.com , fill in "Porsche" and you will see why....
Thousands (and I really mean THOUSANDS) of racing victories, superior engineering (959, 962 PDK), 16 times overall winner at Le Mans and the list is long.
The 914 was not possible for Volkswagen to design without the expertise of Porsche. The 924 was an Audi project in joint venture with our make.

I would call the 911 a superb car, having only had the chance to drive one once, but I think you have to spend more than £100K to have a true super car. Super car is a title that should be reserved for cars that are simply exotic, not a car that most urologists have. I'm talking about the carrera GT, maclaren F1, lamborghini murcielago or the ... 1001 bhp Bugatti Veyron (with the maclaren at 120mph and the bugatti at 0mph, the bugatti still gets to 200mph first...scary...super...) _________________ 1983 - 924 (185K miles) - not mint

the 911 is a supercar...the 911 Turbo is a real rocket....the 911 biturbo is one of the gods of the road. The carrera GT is the absolute god of streets.
the 911 Carrera 4S is the god of the twisties
In the racing bussines porsche is way ahead of any other car manufacturers...just take the 1973 917 for an example. 1100 HP with 1450 possible 2.1 seconds 0-100 kmph....well...aint that just fast ?
and about the 924...dude..you have an euro...just race it around a little bit...you will feel the PORSCHE love _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

ive felt the love man. whenever i need the accelerator it always has along way to go, whenever i need to take a curve the steering is just perfect, I even let go of the wheel sometimes, I trust the Porsche, it will keep me safe.
2.1! isnt that what the ferraris and lamborghinis are just reaching today?
The more I get into this thing the more I see the whys.

for me Porsche is the ultimate car because they are all about performance and driving, they look really nice and unique but they are not too flashy and most are cheaper than ferraris, lamborghinis etc which usually rich people buy and park them on their lawns to look cool.
my favourite car in the world would be a 911 turbo. The porsche name is so famouse obviously because of the racing heritage and the 911 has become the worlds most recognizable sports car. When you say Porsche most people will think 911. _________________ 78 924 sold.

imo one of the main reasons that Porsche got its name, is mainly because of the racing history, but more importantly the cars they produce compete with Ferrari and Lambo, however the required maintenance is ALOT lower and you can actually use one as a daily driver and even fit a car seat in a few models, I do like the 911 line however they are REDICULOUSLY over priced, I can get a 928 for a fraction of the cost that will absolutely smoke a 911 in terms of straight line, top speed, and being able to drive it at the limit. I mean to be able to get a 911 even pre 70s you are looking @ $25K CDN or more,
plus the cars are always light years ahead in technology and Porsche's R&D center is always coming out with new inventions that are absolutly stunning. _________________ 3 928s, |

I'm not saying 911s aren't awesome, they are. They are legends because, exactly as Lizard says, they are reliable and easier/cheaper to fix than lambos and ferraris. I just feel that somehow super cars should be exotic, extravagant machines that really don't work as daily cars!
Porsche are special as they are technically awesome and aren't afraid to branch out (although I suppose Lambo do make tractors...). Dr Ferdinand designed the Beetle (under the employ of Hitler) and I reckon he was the first guy to make a useable 4x4 car. I'll post the picture if I can, it's somewhere on my PC.
The cayenne was pretty radical for Porsche and I hear that they are designing a larger 4 door at the moment... _________________ 1983 - 924 (185K miles) - not mint

I think the Cayenne is a dissapointment, basically a VW Tuareg with the Porsche exterior, but as its their first SUV I guess you gotta start somewhere.

I doubt either of us have driven one (I know I haven't) so sweeping statements like that are a bit harsh when you consider it is very similar to our 924 cars!
A VW block with a Porsche tweaked head and better drive train than the touareg. Better suspension, geometry...
And then of course there are the real cayennes with proper porsche V8s. _________________ 1983 - 924 (185K miles) - not mint

Hello,
First of all: the Cayenne is a real Porsche...in the SUV market. I drove a Cayenne S (V8, 340hp) and I must say I was really impressed. Compared with the VW Touareg the Cayenne is more sporty, more agressive in its riding.
2,1 seconds is from the 917/30; the last 917 racer. Don't believe that a Ferrari or Lamborghini are as fast. 4 or 5 seconds are more realistic.
And Eric, the 993 biturbo last saturday at FG's goes in 3,8 seconds...
The 911 is the one and only for me . The first time I sat in one I was 5 years old, and when my father revved the engine, the sound was unforgettable.
Now, 25 years later I own a 911, and a 931.
The Porsche legend is more than just a legend. _________________ '79 931 with Carrera GT look
