Emissions equpiment requirements vary from state to state and county to county.

You need to check with your local vehicle licensing department to see what the requirements for your area are or are not.

Remember that if you alter your vehicle (like remove the smog equipment) then move to a different area, the laws may be different, you you may be subject to criminal penalty for altering the vehicle. At the very least, before you regiustered teh car in the new location, you would probably be required to restore the missing equipment regardless of the replacement cost.

Here in CA cars manufactured before 1975 are emissions exempt, and cars manufactuered after that will stay emissions equipment required and tested bi-annually, no matter how old they become.

Thanks, the reason I ask is that my mechanic said that the cat may be "clogged" and so I thought about just removing it. Any drawbacks?

Drawbacks?

You mean besides the fact that you would be poisoning all of us, it may be illegal where you live, and your car probably won't run as good as it would with a properly functioning cat?
