|

What's the trick to reaching the driver's side hex-head bolt that holds the tranny to the torque tube which is tucked behind the shift coupler on my 79 snailshell? It's the last bolt holding the tranny. I have the tranny dropped as far as possible and have some wiggle room but the problem is the location of the coupler which is essentially inline with the bolt. The length of the universal joint combined with the hex head socket just won't slip behind the coupler so I cannot get a straight shot at the bolt....I need just a bit more room. Is it possible to remove the shift rod at the shifter in the passenger compartment and pull the rod forward enough for it to disengage from the tranny and thus enable me to push the coupler towards the passenger side? I know I'm missing something. I need the voice of wisdom by those who have been successful.
I'm on my second afternoon at this removal and am so close...but have come to a halt.
Thanks in advance. I really enjoy the forumn and know you guys can fix anything. |

Buy a 10mm ball-end style allen key and cut the short bent end off so all you have is a straight shaft with the ball on the end.Put this shaft into a 10mm socket (I use tape to hold it in or it'll come out when you don't want it to) with an extension and a u-joint and you're good to go.That last bolt is as easy as the rest with this set-up.Good luck. _________________ 1979 Euro 931, Olive

Many thanks to Kenodog for a great suggestion! Bought a 10mm ball-end allen key and cut off the ball just as was suggested....and that little trick worked fantastic. The final bolt was successfully removed and now the snailshell is out in the floor.
Thanks! |
