|
|
Has anyone ever seen items 29 and 30 from the image below? They are the eninge lift brackets which attach (I assume?) on the outer edge of the intake manifold before the bolts go on (or do they go between the manifold and the head?).
The 77 I had and the 80 I still have didn't have these brackets on the engine. When I pulled the engine from the 77, I just wrapped a loop of chain around the whole engine at both the front and back, and lifted off those loops. Not very pretty but it worked.
For putting the engine back in, I think it would be nice to have lift points where I can balance the engine nicely to make connecting it to the torque tube easier. Any ideas on good lift points without these brackets?

Just checked pelican, both brackets are listed at about $5 each. If they are still available, are they worth getting? _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

Yeah my 84 924 has those lift brackets.
I assumed they were standard?
They surly cant support the weight of the engine though??!! |

My '82 came with them too. The front one is further out on the intake, straddling intake runner 1 - http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/smoothies931pics/detail?.dir=bdb3&.dnm=1bd8re2.jpg&.src=ph
The rear one's closer to the block straddling plug #3 - http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/smoothies931pics/detail?.dir=bdb3&.dnm=4630re2.jpg&.src=ph
They should be fine for supporting the engine. If you have a safe technique to go without though, I'm not sure I'd bother with 'em.
You could of course bolt the chain right to the engine by running one of the bolts through a link at front and another toward the rear.. Make sure you have enough thread engagement, if not, use longer bolts.
One advantage to the brackets though, is that the load is spread over 2 bolts for each - ..don't know how critical that is. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

Thanks guys.
Good pics Smoothie, that's the first time I have ever seen a picture of them in real life, they are not shown clearly in the Haynes manual. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

I've got them on all my engines (three turbo motors) three non turbos. As long as the factory bolts are use dthey ok for lifting the engine. _________________ Remember a Porsche is not just for Christmas,

Went out to the garage and checked the 1980, turns out it has one bracket, the front one. Looks like the rear one would be a tight fit with the placement of the AAV, maybe someone ditched it at some point and it got lost. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |
