my dad has driven one and he says you need to learn how to drive the 911/ that you can spin them because of the rear weight. _________________ 78 924 sold.

the 911 is for the purrists....i personaly love the boxter and the cayman....and ofcourse i love the Carrera GT...why do i love them so much ?
Its because of the weight distribution...power and design.
I would not say no to a 911...but i'd prefer a central engine car. or at least a very well balanced one like the 924
i'm talking for track use...because in the streets...you just dont care how balanced your car is...you dont take corners that fast so it spins on you. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

You guys obviously don't know what you're talking about. 911 is very fast on the track, I've driven every generation of them! However, they do require a well-skilled driver to take them fast from A to B, but this is so much fun!
924 has the special place in my heart, but 911 is one very impressive beast! _________________ '83 924 2.6 16v Turbo, 470hp

i never drove a 911...i'd love to...i'm sure its awesome.
Raceboy do you know anything about 911 engines ? i know a guy who has a 911 SC 2.7 with the engine in parts and he does not know how to put it back.
He does not know how to put the distribution in place and the...things that move the pistons...i dont remember how they are called in english right now but in romanian they are: BIELE.
I'd be happy to buy the car from him and restore it myself as a project or at least help him put it back togheder so i can take it for a spin
can i PM you about this ? would you help ? or do you know anybody that can help put back a 911 engine ? _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

Putting together a 911 engine is NOT an easy task, and definitely not something to do when you're not familiar with it!
Does he have all new bolts: new cylinder bolts (Dilavar on 2.7's IIRC), bolts that hold together both sides of the engine block?
Besides, 2.7 is the most "fragile" 911 engine built.
If it's a real SC, it has much better and reliable 3.0 engine (same block as 930).
I'd recommend taking this engine to the nearest Porsche shop.
And I also recommend you guys buy a book "Porsche 911 Performance Handbook", by Bruce Anderson.
And you can take a look here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/wizards/parts_wizard.cgi _________________ '83 924 2.6 16v Turbo, 470hp

yea well...he is a mecanic....but he never worked on Porsches...i will check again with the guy for more info...but i think he wants to use the old bolts. As i remember its a 2.7 1976 or smth like that...its my bigest chance to drive a 911 the nearest Porsche shop is way too far(not in Romania) and i think the guy would not like to pay 100EUR per hour of labor
He says that he dosent know wich side of the conrod goes on top(with the pin on top ?) and he dosent know how to put the distribution up.....the camshafts...wich way must the valves be open/closed when the chain is put on and the engine put togheder....that i could not find on the internet...the guy is an old fella that dont like to spend shit for anything...but i'll try to make him buy the book. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

The old bolts ARE NOT reusable on 911 in any circumstances!!!
And if it's really 2.7 and not worked before, tell him to sell it or have it rebuilt by Porsche dealer. Otherwise he's just making this engine a pile of metal. _________________ '83 924 2.6 16v Turbo, 470hp

go for it!
oh yeah, im back guys, my '77 still resides in the back yard, but i sold my 88 golf GTI (1.8 16v) and i was planning to buy a car that has basically been the car of my dreams the past few years, but the guy decided to keep it......after letting me believe he was dropping it off today.
well anyway, i now have the sum of $700 and i might just dump it into the car i literally never drove....it started in our driveway....and died in our driveway....hopefully....it will be revived in our driveway
p.s. i have always wanted a 930. only place i have ever driven a 911 is in a racing simulator on P.C. haha and even then it was a handful but games can't be compared to reality...just yet |

Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson did a Playstation 2 lap at Laguna Seca in the Honda NSX. He then traveled to California and did a real lap in a NSX at Laguna Seca, and his times were quite a bit different. Popular Science also did a test with Forza. _________________ '79 924 now Totaled! its not really popular in the u.s. and i can't speak for the rest of the world, but im talking about http://www.10tacle.com/gtr-game/
yeah, i saw the topgear and i thought it was kind of funny, i wonder what tires he was running in the game
p.s. any of you guys play that or GT legends? neither work on my new computer, but it would have been awsome if they had the 924 in GT legends. |

I have a 87 Carrera and yes it is nice. It even has a chip in it and it only has 40,000 miles. But I still like the 77.5 924 better, ditto the LEuro 931. The latter are easier to drive.
All are in mint condition. IN the 911 you always have to be aware of what gear you are in, the lane are hard to stay in, and the fear factor that someone will hit you in traffic or the parking lots.
If you can afford one buy it and enjoy it. If not love the one you own. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

I performed a test with 997 S last summer for our magazine and drove it for 3 days including 1 hard tracking day I really loved it with a manual gearbox, that Tiptronic just didn't cut it right, taking away so much fun. It felt like PSM never really switched off (even though I used that "Please-Switch-Me-Off-button )
With manual gearbox, all those bad things went away.
997 is an excellent car that even a rookie can use for quite quick lap times. _________________ '83 924 2.6 16v Turbo, 470hp

Hello,
professional as a Porschemechanic I have driven many sorts of 911's, from 2,0 litre to a 515hp 993 twinturbo and I can say that the 911 is much more than a sportscar; it is THE true one.
In a way, the older ones from before '73 are more interesting at low speeds, they are very "tailhappy" and have very peaky engines. The later cars are more smoother (but not so fast) except the Carrera 2,7 (year '74 and '75) and the not so well known Carrera 3,0 (year '76 and '77)...
The 911 SC and the 3,2 Carrera are also very good dailydrivers, for a "reasonable" price. If you play it well, the don't cost so much, the resell value is very good.
We sold our 911 SC (which I owned together with a friend) after one year of ownership and bought with the profit a 944 turbo...
Now our 911 3,2 is being prepared to go in traffic.
The 964 is a fast car, but can become expensive in maintenance. Faulty electronics, oilleaks for the pré-92 cars, engine requires good maintenance to keep it good.
The 993 is probably the best of the aircooled 911 range. Hot looks (for some too modern), very good engine, brakes, suspension, gearbox...
But on the other hand: the 924 is the cheapest way to start with Porschedriving, and it's handling is very much underrated by the public.
The transaxle cars can beat a 911 on track, and this for the fraction of the cost of a good 911. Remember: driving a 911 fast needs a very skilled driver, driving the transaxle fast is much more easier.
We bought the 944 turbo to go to the tracks, because if we take a 911, damage on the car will be bad for the wallet...
And a 924 turbo will beat a 911, as long as you use the balanced chassis and the 911 is driven by a not so skilled driver. _________________ '79 931 with Carrera GT look
