|
|
Hi Guys,
I brought a 1980 2.0 924 last week and thought i'd introduce myself .
I currently own three cars, a peugeot 106 rallye, a Westfield and now the 924.
I brought the 924 as I want a car to do some track days in. The car needs some work but the shell seems really good other than a few small dents and a bit of surface rust. It needs a new exhaust, which I've ordered and the bumper repairing (it's in my bedroom at the moment and I'm going to have a go tonight).
Other things wrong are:
wipers come on, on their own
theres a slight whine from the gearbox/diff/torque tube?
there are some bits of trim missing
it pulls to the left slightly
it runs really rough until 2000rpm but then isn't bad after that
I'm want to have a go at sorting the faults myself and tidy it up abit.
There are some photos here, although it does look alot better in the flesh, especially now as I've washed it:

So far i've found some really help info on this web site.
Thanks
Kirk

nice one! - welcome (p.s my first car was a '93 106Xsi which I was inspired to buy after a drive in a rallye - you have good taste my friend!)
running rough til 2000 sounds like timing, but also could be the advance on the distributor not working properly - is it bang on 2000 or 'around about 2000' ?
wipers coming on on their own sounds like you may need to get behind the wheel and clean some contacts... or dry the car out
whine from the gearbox will be the transaxle - best and cheapest cure is a louder stereo... sorry, being facetious, but I've not had one fixed yet!
pulling to the left is probably the geometry being out since its 'impact' - lookiing at the pics!

Hi,
Thanks for the comments.
I need to check the tracking. It may have been the impact, or I think it may be that previous owner changed the track rods ends and may have not set the tracking right. It's not too bad anyway, but I want to have it right.
I'm going to give the car a full service as well. I'm hoping new plugs and leads will have it running better.
I need to get under the dash and see if I can sort the wipers out. It looks like some one has put a relay under there and I can here it when the wipers switch is on.
I did find the noise from the split in the back box covered the gearbox whine and the CD player covered the noise of the back box .

Did you pay the full £250?!? Nice car for the track.
I guess missing some interior trim is an ideal start for a track car.
The whine could be the transaxle or the torque tube. Either way, a PITA to change anything about it. My old 924 with 180,000 miles whines...never bothered me.
Doing a good service on the engine including timing, cap, wires, plugs will probably help your rough low revs considerably.
Pulling to the side could be the impact on frame geometry. Likely to be the tracking out.
Enjoy!

It's not quite that much, but 5 months MOT and 8 months tax, sot isn't bad. It's also got a fairly new CD player.
I know the guy I brought it off from the Westfield owners club and he just need to get rid of it hence the low price.
I got my new exhaust today as well, so I'm looking forward to fitting that so I can get driving the car.

gsfcarparts and eurocarparts will now become your favourite places to shop They stock most parts and I think you'll be surprised how cheap most of the stuff is - though that's just aswell when you think of the age on these cars! _________________ Mars Red '78 Euro 924 n/a

So we're talking about £120s of tax - the car was £80!
Sweet - it's all about who you know.... _________________ 1983 - 924 (185K miles) - not mint

I got my new exhaust from GSF car parts and they were the cheapest and delivered really fast, so I'll be using them more. I used to use europarts alot as they had a branch about 2 minutes walk from my house. They cloed that though, so haven't used them in a while.
It is alot of car for the money, and I've just been having fun telling people I own a Porcshe
I started repairing the bumper as well, I think it should look pretty good when its done. Going to try to fit the exhaust and service it tomorrow or saturday if I get chance and then I should be able to get out and drive it.
I'm not sure what colour to spray the bumper, is it just a standard Porsche silver?
I'm off to Le Mans in the Westfield on Monday, though, so thats my priority at the moment.
I was also wondering, are there any 924 or Porsche owners club meets in the North West of England? I wouldn't mind meeting a few other owners and seeing some other 924's.
