Did the 924 turbo come standard with an under engine tray?
If so how dit it look and where was it situated, eg under radiator/front of engine?
Further, would it make any sense to run a cooling ducts from the front of the car onto the outside of the turbo to try and cool it down, as to increase the life span of the turbo?
Would like some opinions?

I believe it did. Would run from the radiator lower edge, IIRC, back to the crossmember.
To improve the lifespan of the turbo - cooling the oil that lubricates it should be more effective than cooling the outer casing. Since you already have a stock cooler, I'd either focus on better ducting of that existing cooler, or replacing the cooler with a larger one.
Since the fittings used are metric and less common than AN fittings for oil line plumbing (at least over here in the US), I'd focus on ducting improvements.
Heat exchangers (radiators, coolers, etc) can experience a marked improvement in efficiency simply through proper ducting. Use sheetmetal sealed w/ tape to properly enclose the path of air into (and, to whatever extent possible, out of) the cooler, making sure that it's very difficult for air to just go around the cooler.
Exactly what is the running condition and cooling problem you're trying to solve? Knowing this would help identify the required area of improvement... _________________ Vaughan Scott

I bought the FMIC system from "OUTTHEBOX" and is going to fit it to my track car. This car does not have a u/e tray.
I will however have the large front mounted BMW M3 oil cooler as well and was thinking of making ducts to channel air from the bottom lip of the valance to the 2 coolers/radiator. It will basically start at the bottom lip of the valance running to underneath the radiator, the same width as the chassis?
That is why I thought about cool air ducting to the turbo housing as well, because I will lose the stock oil cooler and can run ducting from the slots there?. _________________ 1980 924 N/A Ex-931 Track car: My cash guzzler

Ah, OK. At that point, I'd be more interested in using the ducting space to cool the brakes. _________________ Vaughan Scott

Yep, it sure did come with a tray under the engine.
Unfortunately, I don't have access to my car at the moment, or I'd take a pic for you. It's a big tray that covers practically all of the underside of the engine compartment. It has vents in it, although I'm not sure they do a whole lot... they may extract some hot air? _________________ '80 924 Turbo |
