Amazing. It broke of so cleanly! Right across the no. 4 exhaust(?) oil hole.

Looks like something's been clouting it; presumably after the end broke off...

yeah, looks like it fractured about where the inlet spray hole is and then the bit that broke off must have got a whack from the cam lobe...

anyway, bored of that project, now taking speedo to bits...

The evidence of the picture might seem to indicate the tube was bent when installed. You can see the remaining end is bent down and the bit broken off was being hit by the cam lobe.

Is it possible the subsequent lack of direct lubrication has caused excess wear on the cam lobe and thence the bucket? For that matter, what condition are all the lobes and buckets?

er, I guess, time's muddying my memory, but I believe that the problem was there from the off (a year ago), and the several times I'd opened her up to atttempt to fix her since the oil spray tube was OK. - I may have some pics though which prove I'm talking nonsense, will check!

Sean,

I know you have one of Jon Mitchells heads fitted on the car. Has the problem been there since the mod? Only reason I ask is I am hoping to get one of these heads and spoke to Jon about the work involved. Just checking something didn't get dropped or spattered into No4 exhaust during the mod.

the tappet problem has been there since I got the head back. I doubt anything has been dropped in, more likely a mistake was made with the tappet order. It is also possible that the problem was there before as I had sent an unknown head to Jon for the mod as my existing head was not a suitable candidate. Maybe you could ask Jon about the specifics of my head. I had thought about returning my car to Jon to have the problem looked at, but he's rather a long way from here!

yes, cheers - I have removed the 1 notch that was in there and put in a 3 notch, I also have a 4 notch, but didn't think it worth putting it in - remember I can get a .8 feeler guage in there. Will I get another .4 from the next adjuster up?

Well, with your oil pipe broken, you probably flattened off your cam lobes. That would account for your cam followers not adjusting properly. You may need a new cam, and possibly followers. Used cams are cheap, followers are expensive.

no, sorry but I can't buy that, this is the second cam shaft and the problem was there from start up after cam change. the problem is not when the lobes are pushing on the tappet, the problem is when its TDC, so I can't see how a lack of friction on the tappet would cause the cam lobe to flatten. Does that make sense?

EDIT: also, oil pipe wasn't always broken, this is new.

Sean, I think what numbbers meant is that some damage to the cam lobes might have been done after the pipe broke and the end was being continually clouted by the cam. There is some evidence of this in your photo of the broken end.

My feeling is, judging from the photograph, that any wear on the cam lobe caused by this will be extremely minimal.

yeah, I agree.

The main fault, I think we've worked out, is something that was there already though - he seemed to boil the whole prob down to the oil pipe.

anyway I've just had a completion date on my house, so all of this goes majorly on hold! - even had to whack the speedo back in without any fix (seems to work for the mo but it won't be long before it stops again!)

its packing time for me...
