This is as single-owner 38,363 mile 1977 Porsche 924 with a Renegade Hybrids EFI 4.3L Vortec V6 engine conversion. In addition to the vehicle shown are included the factory hood, weltmeister springs appropriate for the added weight of the V6 to preserve the handling, and a service manual for the EFI harness which allows on-board diagnosis of sensors and controls.
This car has been in our family since 1977 when my father purchased it as new. Even as new my father was not impressed with the anemic 95 hp inline four that it came from the factory with. Along came a son that shared his passion for automobiles and as he reached driving age the quest began to enable this machine with power to match its handling.
So, this 38,363 mile original 924 was bastardized with a 200+ horsepower CPI injected 4.3L V6 out of a 1995 Jimmy with 47,000 miles. Every aspect of this “kit” had to be redesigned or reengineered to make this work.
A few obstacles that were overcome in short:
Marine 4.3L Serpentine Tensioner
1967 911 Manual Brake Master Cylinder
Howell EFI Computer Harness w/ PCM, Custom Chip, and SES Light
Custom True Equal-length (or damn close to) Headers with Oxygen Sensor
Hybrid Porsche/GMC throttle linkage
Electric Fan with Working Thermostatic Control
and that is just a brief overview.
It is finished but for a few items. Which compared to what has already been completed on the car are relatively easy, but we have completed this project to a point we are comfortable with and have lost the heart necessary to correct the following.
Over the many winters that elapsed, the block was not properly drained of a mostly water /antifreeze mix and cracked. We had it professionally welded and we reinstalled it. It may have cracked internally as well as there is an unsettling mechanical noise in the engine. Our diagnosis is that it needs a new short block, it may not however.
The original Porsche ignition switch is faulty as it breaks down intermittently and drops voltage to the coil (this has been bypassed with a direct 12 volt feed for proper running but requires pulling the jumper to kill the engine)
It needs a new battery. Further, as a result of pull starting it with a tractor, a chain broke and cracked the windshield.
The paint is not perfect as it is original but considering it is quite good but for a few areas shown.
The original hood (provided) needs to be cut for the intake manifold to clear and a fiberglass cowl installed.
With all that said the potential is there… It starts right up, idles, revs like a dragster, and will blow the tires away on a drive.
Considering the low mileage and condition of this car we could likely get much more out of parting it out, however we are going to try to sell it complete first, so that someone out there can finish it as it deserves.
The reserve has been set lower than the original cost of the conversion kit alone without the car, the engine, the EFI harness, the headers- almost a grand in materials and HOURS upon HOURS of labor… if this car doesn’t sell these headers will be mounted on my wall and framed, and everything else in the finished product. |
