Hey guys, Lately, it seems like my car has been getting too hot. I havent even been pushing it hard at all. I have been driving in traffic, but I have not been stopped for long periods of time, and its hot, like one bar abouve halfway. Is that normal?

What can I do to fix it? Would it help to flush the system, and start with new? Or could I need a new pump or sometihng?

Ryan

Have you checked your thermostat? They can break, the one in my car was broken when I got it.

Is it hot outside? Is the car displaying other symptoms or overheating, like detonation ("pinging") or coolant loss?

I doubt it is a problem. . .not only does the stock gauge system suck, but the manual says this:

Under normal driving conditions, needle should remain in center field. The needle may reach the red field, especially at high engine loads, but should return to "normal" when engine load is reduced.

Maybe it is the fan. I have only heard it a few times. Also, the previous owner told me the thermostat is leaky.

Uhh, and how did he know that? Unless he took it out, observed a poor seal, and reinstalled it, he didn't.

Worth checkin into though, I guess, at least for P.O.M. value.

Have you checked for an air pocket in the system? Especially if someone checked the thermostat and did not bleed the air out. Also, if you have any persistant coolant leakage, you should check for air pockets regularly.....my old expansion tank had a pin-hole leak and after a period of time air entered the system which gave me a warmer than usual temp reading occasionally. Replaced the tank, refilled and it's running as cool as a cucumber.....
Hope this helps....

i have the exact inverse "problem"...if i dont put the engine under load and i cruise around 2000-2500 RPM in 5th gear the engine stays on the white spot. and never heats up. If i drive at 3000RPM the needle goes on the first white stripe fron the left. However if i drive the car in the city(heavy trafic) the needle jumps to the midle of the gauge...it goes 1 mm over the white centred stripe then the fan kicks in and cools the engine. Its kinda weird of how the coolant temp(and engine temp) fluctuates that fast and easy at these cars.

Do you have any crud in your coolant. If you or previous owners haven't used the correct coolant/water mix, it doesn't take long for the coolant pipes and/or radiator to clog up with garbage. If there is a sign of calcification in your pipes or coolant tank then it probably suggests that your radiator cores are also clogged. This is a pretty common reason for older cars to overheat. You can try flushing the system, but the only real way to sort it out is to remove the radiator and take it in to a radiator specilaist for a flush. leak test and, if necessary, repair.

Hmm, I added some more cooland the other day and it solved the problem. I feel sort of stupid. I thought it was at an adequite level. Im going to keep and eye on it though....I think that might just be a temporary fix.
