hi all
i've been lurking for sometime and finally joined! i bought my wife a 79 924 with some problem that i resolved by searching. the main problem i am having now is 1-2 gear clash when cold and it's reduced when i've driven some miles and everythings warmed up. any ideas?. also, my shift coupler is half broken! is there some easy way to replace this? (i do have a hole under the back seat). thanks

there is nothing really that can be done for the 1-2 shift,
with the shifter linkage, what is worn is two plastic bushings, you have to remove the tranny to be able to remove the shift rod to be able to replace the bushings.
while you are at it you will need to replace the ball cup bushing as well. _________________ 3 928s, |

Do you mean without rebuilding the gearbox? It sounds like a syncho problem to me... the syncho's can be replaced, right? _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

Only if you can find the parts, mine was in the shop for a year and cost over $1500 when I picked it up. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

I have the audi tranny and had some 1-2 grinding. I changed the fluid from whatever the PO had to Amsoil synthetic (I think it was 75W-90). That seemed to help, but I still have to double clutch between 1-2. At first it was a little wierd, but now it is second nature. _________________ Rob

Rob's right, synthetic can make a difference. I found it especially true on the snailshell tranny. I haven't ever had the grinding problem on my car but switching to Redline (I think it was Redline, it was a while ago) made shifting much smoother in general.
And not to change the subject, but Paul... Do you have any pictures of your car? I just noticed that huge flare on the rear. |

Yeah, I just put in the multi weight Royal P, and my trans is much happier. . .of course, it was stored for quite a while. . .

EBS Racing can help sourcing synchros, though it may be tricky to ID the correct one for 1st gear, to do the rebuild.
I highly recommend considering having it rebuilt before the dog teeth on the actual gears are damaged; if the latter happens, you're looking at many hundreds if not thousands for each part alone, instead of $100-120 per synchro. _________________ Vaughan Scott

Fix coupler first. It is cheaper and then go further. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

Actually Khal I meant entirely, as it mainly happens while cold. you just have to learn how to shift nicely and rev match as much as is possible or skip second while cold.
also this is for the 924 NA snailshell, for which I imagine the syncros will be even harder to find than the 931 snailshell. _________________ 3 928s, |

thanks for the replies! i'll try the synth oil first. on my shift coupler it's not the bushings the rear "horseshoe" parts is broken and the po put a bolt through it!. i do have mixed feelings about this car sort of a love hate relationship! it is fun to drive around town but i dont trust it yet on long trips!

Fix the bushings first. If broken it will not go all the way to one side and therefore the grinding.
