I googled but didn't come up with anything helpful, other than obvious things like stretching the leather, then gluing it on. I'm wondering how hard it would be to cover the dash with vinyl or leather. Anyone done this before? $80 for a dash cap is kind of a lot.

What is under the foam material on the top of the dash that cracks? Metal? Could you just strip it and spray paint the metal frame underneath?

under the foam is cardboard, I personally do not recomend stripping the foam, you could just strip old vinyl, fix the cracks and glue new vinyl back on. I fiberglassed my dash but it isn't done yet. will continue sometime next spring, I was considering painting dash after its done, but now i am leaning more towards wraping it in vinyl, looks more european that way.

Eh, I had never worked with it before and it was really hard to do... There is a post on someone who did it successfully though, I ended up scrapping it and choosing a different route.

I'm also very eager to learn about leather upholstry, but when looking at the work done by pro's you soon understand that this is a craftmanship, and that they know a trick or two that we don't.

So does anyone know of good books/resources on this topic?

Btw: over at rennlist Paul Champagne has mentioned that he might make a leather kit for the early 944 and 924 dash, and seeing what he has accomplished on the 928 interiors I belive a full leather 924 interior would take the car to a new level.

Take a look at some of his work:
928 Pod
Armrest (should also fit in the 924)
Steering wheels

Hey hey! Let's not make him shrink THAT avatar. If anything, can you make it bigger!?

(Slap)....yes dear.....I'm shutting it off right now.

Psst......I think Paul gave up on that project of the leather dash due to low demand for the early 944 and the 924 and the complexity of the dash. He does a beautiful job though.

Desolation, Jesus Man, Come on! You know I have Dial Up!

I have been thinking, is there (I doubt it) some kind of spray that would give a soft texture like that of vinyl? And then I could just spray it whatever color I want? I would really love a leather or vinyl dash that would give it a high quality look.

Are all dash caps just ABS plastic, or are there any ones that are soft. Mine was just hard plastic, but it was broken.

I've only seen the hard ABS plastic ones.

What color are you needing?

My suggestion would be to only strip away the vinyl where it has cracked, maybe a couple of cms each side of the cracks. Fill the cracks with a soft polyeurathane - I'll dig up some links. To cover, use a uv-stabilised vinyl designed for auto or marine use - see your local auto upholsterer. Try very hard to find an un-backed vinyl (no material backing). If you can't find un-backed then you can strip the backing off the vinyl but it's a really slow boring job.

Get some really good contact adhesive and a heatgun and practice sticking the vinyl on odd-shaped things like bottles, balls, cats, small children etc. When you get a feel for how the vinyl works then attack the dash.

Easy!

Ya Peter, I guess I'll have to practice some. I'm planning on making it a light, tan brown. I'll also get new carpet for it, and all leather seat covers. I'm also painting the trim that was dark brown before to black. It'll look so much better with a nice dash.

Actually that was Rob Budd (who also does dash work) who decided it was too much work. Paul is indeed continuing to develop an early dash replacement. They both do great work from what I have seen and I look forward to seeing what he comes up with.
