|
|
Is the valve cover nut any special size (threads)? I know it is 10mm (M 6). I dropped one which is now lost underneath the car in the engine bay (can't find it on the ground). When I started the car after losing it, there was some sounds from the engine, like maybe a nut. It may have fallen in the alternator, but I can't see it in there. Any (easy) way to get it out if it is in there?
Also, are the washers any special material or could I just throw a washer on there and be fine?

the washers have a slight flex in them to prevent them from backing off,
however if it possible that you dropped in inside the engine and it is in the oil pan? _________________ 3 928s, |

No, the engine was closed as the valve cover was not off yet...this was the first nut. _________________ Rob

It is just a standard German metric nut.
I say German because; believe it or not in my 15 years as an auto tech I found that their is an Asian and German metric (at least on older cars), the difference is in the pitch of the treads; one will fit the other but will rock on the stud and could become loose _________________ Rick

there are three pitches to every size. .75- fine, 1.0- standard, 1.25- corse...
if you use anything but what is intended you will cross thread whichever is the softer material... stud/nut
there is a sticky post in the genreal discussion section which has a link to a download for the porchse PET file... use it...

Thanks, but I downloaded it when it first became a sticky...that is how I knew it was a M 6 nut. The PET says nothing about the thread pitch, but I'll go with the coarse thread as Mike924 says. _________________ Rob

The ISO/DIN convention is that if the pitch isn't specified it means that the thread is standard (which is always the coarsest, I'm afraid, Leadfoot).
The standard pitch of M6 is 1.0 mm
Most metric sizes have a fine thread version and some of the larger diameter sizes have two, or even three, fine thread versions (in addition to the standard/coarse).
There is only one M6 fine thread version, with a pitch of 0.75 mm. _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)
