I just got this off ebay with plans to "upgrade" my front sway bar on the 924.

This was from a 944 which I understood was a direct bolt on. Regardless it is no bigger in diameter and does not look like it would ever fit a 924.

Here's a picture...you guys set me straight would ya

That does look like a 944 bar, but it would only be a direct bolt-on for late '82-up 924,931,944,etc. You'd need the later mounting hardware that goes with it to use it + would need to provide at least one more threaded hole on each side of the frame to fit the inboard drop-links + have to drill the a-arms to fit the end mounts (which attach directly to the undersides of the a-arms). Then when you're done, your old ptotection plate (aka- "belly pan") wouldn't fit back on, so you'd need a later belly pan if that's important to you.

The late '82-up 924-931-944 bar and mountings -

The earlier bar and it's mounts which you already have -

Notice your current bar mounts higher-up and uses long end-links to attach to the a-arms.
The 944 bar mounts lower-down with long inboard mounts and the ends attach to the bottoms of the a-arms..

Thanks for the explanation Smoothie!

Yep, you could still switch to it with Smoothie's directions. There are factory 944/968 front bars up to 30mm I believe. The largest 924/early front bar is 23mm.

This one is only a 26 mm so hardly worth the effort to change it. I am planing to run in the modified class next year so I will be able to run some heavier gear then was available stock. Anyone want this thing for $10.00..thats what I paid.

I have one that size on the 77.5. Not a problem at all. I welded on the straps and bolted the sway bar on and the ends fit perfectly too.

Yeah that does not look like a 944 bar.

I have a 944 sport suspension bar for sale. It is much larger in diameter than that one. I have all the drop links with it. The thing I would note... and maybe it was above and I missed it... is that the mounts to the control arms are also different and I do not think the 924 arms would work. I do have a set of the 944 control arms to also go with the bar if interested.

One of the control arms would need a new ball joint. I manged to wreck the boot when trying to sepperate it from the suspension and brakes.

might want to look at a larger diameter sway bar and then switch it out.
