Just started looking for my first Porshe 924, I've been wanting one since I was 16 and I've finally decided (I'm 35 now) its time to take the plunge.

However I find myself wavering between getting the 924s or the 81-82 931. I'm assuming others have been through this conundrum. Any thoughts?

Is the 931 cheaper to maintain? Does the 924s have the same 4 wheel disc brakes? Would it be totally cheesy to put a 931 hood on the 924 just because I like the look of the air ram?

Lastly, whats the likelyhood of finding a 931 in good enough condition to use as a daily driver... is this a rare bird?

John

i'd go for the 931 everytime. soon as i find one - it is mine. we all know the pros and cons from previous threads, go for what you want and buy the best you can - don't rush!

the 931 just looks so good (with a colour coordinated bonnet (or hood)).

I have owned all three of the cars you mentioned at the same time.

771/2 of the three the lowest cost to maintain
79 924 turbo runs great but I am always leery that I will blow the turbo
88 924S costly to fix but great fun with lots of power, only worry is the head with valves hitting pistons

No money or very little buy the latest 924 81-82

I think I am right as the owner of the 77 since new and know how much it costs to run the car compared to the others.

Got money buy the 924S.

It depends on how well you work with your hands. These cars have many of the same issues. Though the 924S engine has more to watch over due to the ballance shafts... but eht 931 has the turbo to worry about.

931 and 924S both had hydrolic (sp) clutch slave to worry about. Both have interference engine... belt snaps... oops bad engine. 924S has power steeing and racks that leak.

2.0L 924 has none of those issues

I would say go for the 924S. Try to find a 1988. That year was the most powerful NA 924S that was produced.

The 1988 would be 6 years newer than the newest 931 you could find in the USA.

As Vince says the 1981-82 924s' are nice cars and not to bad to maintain.

But if I had the money... and could find a great example of a 924S that had been properly maintained and has the paperwork to back it up... I would go for that over the 931. Though... I do like the 931 too , just not as much for a daily driver.

Eric
