well i have 2 projects going, the celica all trac and 924s. the celica is newer 89. both r great, all trac rules in the winter. but i love how the 924 handles, so i feel i have the best of both worlds. also a suv when both r being worked on.

Peace of mind?

If you follow the conventional wisdom, you get to do it all again in 3 years or 30,000 miles. Which basically means that in 3 years or less (if nothing else is done.. ) you will have plunked down $8000 for a 20+ year old car.

Priceless? Oh ...there is definitely a price for driving these cars....

Liability is cheap because all you will do is put a dent in the bumper of an SUV as you pass under it ...

You may want to consider dumping collision insurance. Almost any significant damage and they are simply going to total the vehicle and pay you close to nothing...

Wow, I didn't realize the belt service was so expensive...what special tools (specifically) do you need to replace the timing belt properly? And what are these "balance belts"?

Jeez, why did Porsche design an interference motor with a belt, and not a chain? My Supra's I-6 engine has a timing belt, but it is non-interference...you pretty much just use it until it breaks, then replace the belt...all is fine. The one on my car is probably 6+ years old and has a small gouge...I'm not worried about it!

For those of you who like to fix things yourself, and get satisfaction from a job well done and money saved, there is a cheaper route. You can do the complete job with rebuilt waterpump, new idler and tensioner pulleys, new timing and balance shaft belts, and front engine seals for well under 500 dollars. And do it in a weekend! Ask me how!

Not trying to step on toes here, but there is no reason to get ripped just to maintain your belts.

I can see saving the labor charge by doing the work yourself, if you are willing to spend the money to buy the specialized tools that are required, and the Factory Service Manual so you can understand what needs to be done and how it is done. You will use the tools over and over again while you own the car, saving thosands of dollars in labor charges.

I can't see cheaping out and buying generic parts of inferior quality that do not include any warranty just to save a few bucks. Yeah, if you know what to look for, and can inspect the parts before you pay for them, and are willing to take the risk due to no warranty, then by all means, it's your car and your money.

BUT, the more expensive Porsche Factory Parts are definitely higher quality, and they do come with a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty that will cover the cost of replacement parts, labor to install the replacement parts, AND the parts and labor to repair the other damage that occurs if the warrantied parts fail.

What you you get from the company remanufactured or sold you that inexpensive rebuilt water pump when it fails, seizes, throws the timing belt, and destroys your engine's valves? That would be.... ZERO, NOTHING, NADA.

You could save a few hundred $$$ now, and pay thousands $$$ days, or months later.... No thanks.

Never had an aftermarket part fail. And if you replace and inspect that stuff as much as you are supposed to, you should be aware of any problems.

I don't mean to threadjack...but how does a seized water pump destroy the timing belt? Or is this only on 924S/944 motors? Just by looking at my 2.0 924 engine, it doesn't seem like that would be likely...

And what is a good aftermarket brand water pump? I bought an Meyle, and it seems to be very solid, and good quality.

Whoa...

I'm glad I bought the 2.0 engine.

And sorry for the double post... not sure how that happened.
