Is there a OD difference between the NA sockets and the Turbo sockets???

Am working on getting the old #27 back on the road for 2008 an am cleaning up the injection system. Pulled the injectors and had them cleaned and tested by a local Porsche repair shop. Purchased from him new sockets. Went to put them in last night and no go.

Mic'd the old socket and the new socket and there about a 1/32 difference in OD. Also, the new sockets are sort of an orange color where as the old are a light brownish.

Anyone run into this problem before

do you mean the bungs?

the bungs for a 931 should have thread in it whilst the NA hasn't.

I'm pretty sure the OD and thread size are the same between 924NA-931.
Yes, a more obvious difference would be at the internal opening - the 924NA injectors are push-in and sealed with an o-ring, while the 931 injectors are screw-in.

After looking at the 924 parts catalog the drawing of the two different sockets seems to have a similar appearance and are both thread in.

The sockets I have, both new and removed look identical but there is definite a difference in the OD

NA and 931 are both 24mm OD at 1.5 pitch.
Similar but smaller at 22 x 1.5 are ones available for various VW.

Problem might be solved.

Shop that I purchased them from shipping out new ones which are similar in color.

Appears grabed wrong ones off shelf.

If possible always take old part with you if possible

I changed mine while the engine was out.. It use to have the brownish ones in there, when I got a set from Porsche they were orangeish in color.

They were a bitch to get it, but I did manage.. (they are a fraction bigger than the ones in there)

Here is how I did it:

I put some greese both on the sleeve and the thread on the block. Then I got the first bit of it in. Took it out and cleaned up any plastic that was in there from installing the new sleeve. I did this a couple of times and eventually got them all installed. I tried doing it in 1 go at first and ended up having to hack it out and buy a new sleeve. Be patient with them, but they are installable. Once it was in all the way, it is impossible to get them back out. But they are in properly so I dont really mind. I could not afford to wait 3 weeks to have some of the other ones shipped over here so I had to make use of the orangish ones..

Confirm that 931 and 924 are the same OD. Also confirm that there seems to be a large variance in OD tolerance. I buy a lot of these for conversion to EFI style injectors and I never know what I'm gonna get from the same manufacture. Some will go in easily with your fingers and others want to strip the tool!

The original inserts were installed with a sealer which hardens with time. It is very important to remove the old sealer, before trying to install new inserts.

You also need to use a non-hardening sealer when installing the new inserts. I use Permatex Non-Hardening Sealer. The use of sealer will also lubricate, and make it easier to install the new inserts.

As always, Genuine Porsche Parts have the best manufacturing tolerances. I would guess that Genuine Bosch Parts will be identical in quality. Stay away from unbranded parts of unknown origin, and you won't have fitment problems.

Makes all the difference running a tap down the insert holes in the head to clean them out and recut minor imperfections. Also screwing an insert through a die first corrects the tolerance imitations of the moulding and removes the 2 prominent joint lines.

M24 x 1.5 tap and die included in ebay purchase of chinese tap set for less $30 with post. Good value for money and less than 1/2peice of the tap alone!

Do not doubt the response on the thread size but have called several hardware sources and they question the 1.5 pitch as not common.

Did find a tap & die set online from Harbor Freight or as I call it China Freight that has the size in it. My local store has a few sets in stock and will check out on my way home. Cost for set is around $60

Harbor Freight Part# 41452-3VGA

Checked the new sockets for OD last night and they are 24mm.

Got them in!!!!!!

Took some work.

Basically took a pice of 220 paper and with the 12mm allen wrench turned the socket in the sandpaper till I got 10-15 thou off. Using the die from the Harbor Frieght set rethreaded.

Was able to start the threads and took some effort to bottom but went in!!!!

The Tap & Die set from Harbour Freight id quite good for quality. A lot of pieces for $60
