has anybody considered a conversion to the Olds Quad 4. Not the sexiest to talk about, but 190 hp without a turbo. High performance parts are fairly pricey. But, it can look beautiful in the old Offenhauser sort of way.

I would love to see some one do this swap.I think the Quad 4 is worth another look.It may or may not be too tall, but since you guys were talking about the 2.3 ford, why not mention this .Plus don't forget about GM's latest modern marvel the "ecotec"Its a real rice killer. _________________ 77.5 Porsche 924/4.9L cadillac swap

I allways liked the way these engines run but they do like to self destruct with headgasket and timing chain problems. The early ones like to break heads too. They are pretty short but the have a cast aluminum oil pan and a strange chain driven oil pump and balancer that drops pretty low and might interfere with the 924 crossmember. Would take some engineering but not impossible.

Ha! You've had little less luck than some. My magic number is ~135,000 miles then they come undone. I had five in a row come thru my shop undone between 130K and 138K in a 6 month period. I did see one customer go 264K before his grand daughter ran it out of oil. She had to go almost 20,000 miles without an oil change to accomplish this.
I think if you can catch one before it comes #### they would be very rebuildable. All the ones I have had the head off of still have the cross hatch in the cylinders. A simple ring, bearing and gasket job should revive one of these suckers for atleast another 100,000 miles.
You gotta admit these are a very rev happy engine and build gobs of low end torque. Possibly with some head studs and a low boost turbo this would be a very fun motor in a 2500lb slot car like the 924.

FWD engine of choice: Saturn 1.9 liter - VERY LIGHT and builds power very easily. Mine is around 180 hp with a few goodies (130 fwhp). That's stock internals! Just a few bolt ons. Great gas mileage - and it would lighten up the front of the 924 by 150 lbs! _________________ Classic British Sports Car Restoration v6 + v8 Engine Conversion Swaps

Interesting choice. I've heard good things about them but I've always found them to be a bit of slug in stock form. It may just be most of my Saturn owning customers are also "slugs" when it comes to general maintenance so the only time I see their cars is on a hook. Not a real fair comparison.

I agree with what "AppleBit" said about the 100k mileage,I would expect everyone doing any kind of engine swap,do it with a fresh engine.I know that is almost always not the case. A modded NA quad makes 200+ hp,They have also been boosted with great success.Anyone interested in the engine, can find great build threads and success storys on the pennocks fiero forum. Also don't forget about the later engines the "2.4 twin cam"and the new "2.2 ecotech". _________________ 77.5 Porsche 924/4.9L cadillac swap
