Just thought I would ask , what is your gas consumption , measured, and what gas do you use? Octane, and brand thoughts? I have been using high test in my 87 924s and mid grade in 81 924 na usually exon and vallero best mileage is with 81 got little over 30 at constant 65 mph, 5 speed tranny of course, the 87 averages 25 around town and 29 on road butI do admit to getting on it a little too much ! I live incountry and the 2 laned 55mph roads with lots of curves are just too inviting to realy be careful with the throttle , I do plan a few weeks of very sedate driving tosee how great the mileage can be on both cars Also I have both the low fifth and the high fith 944 924s trannies availible wht differce do you think the different fifth gear would make on road as far as mileage is concerned? Have the 944 high fifth in now to see what happens! PS Lt sentme the following message , NEW ROAD SIGN to be placed at every exit where gas is sold " Do you feel Abused??" _________________ jesse wall 'new driver' , 87 924s |

Back in the day when I drove the 924 all the time and had not changed the cam and such I used regular gas from Halfners (sp?).
I was getting around 30 mpg when I was not doing 80mph. When I did a trip or two down to Conn from Mass I observed around 30.
I also would run Mobile super now and again to clean the system out.
Ah back when gas was $0.89 a gallon!
I have not tracked it since that time though. _________________ 1982 924

I run Mobil 87 in the NA, the Shark, and the 924S. I run Mobil 93 in the 941 and my BMW 3 Series. I run a bottle of techron every spring in each car with my spring oil change (switching from 10W40 winter oil to 20W50 summer oil).
Oh, forgot to add, I don't measure gas mileage so I have no idea what kind of mileage I'm getting on any of the cars, except for the 325i, but that only because the computer tells me. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

I've always run the highest grade of fuel and oil available. I've been told the car doesn't need it but peace of mind is hard to come by in these cars so I get it when I can.
The worst thing you can do for an engine is not change the oil. |

Thanks for the responses , I think I will try to follow up on mileage thing as it is getting more important for lots of folks and will most likely really help the value of these cars if it is know that they are very good on the pocket at least in this aspect. Forgive my ignorance but what is a 941? Thanks Jesse. _________________ jesse wall 'new driver' , 87 924s |

| ideola wrote: | Finally got around to actually measuring mileage on the 924NA. I took my son out driving the other day, teaching him how to drive the manual, so I'm quite pleased with the results, all things considered. This is a mix of country highway driving and around town driving, all done on plain ol' 87 octane. Also, the NA has the Audi big bore throttle body and a straight pipe (no cat). New plug wires, cap, rotor, plugs, and a top-end rebuild about 8-9K miles ago.
216.8 miles / 10.669 gallons = 20.32 MPG |

I used to get 28-30mpg in my 87 924S with 87 on the highway. Around 23-24 in town. _________________ --Alex--

I get about 30 highway and probably lower 20's in city driving. I think my compulsion to accelerate into turns on the back roads contributes to my poor city mileage. Can't help it though, when I see a properly angled turn I simply must accelerate into it! _________________ 1988 924S Navy Blue - Phone Dials |

Somehow I think that running in 3rd instead of 5 th on country roads may contribute to the same thing, find myself doing that all the time , the same car I got 31 miles to the gallon on highway 95 doing at least an average of 65 miles an hour [ for 770 miles] is getting between 17 and 18 around the 45 to 55 mph neighbor hood roads , but what the heck is it fun or what!! _________________ jesse wall 'new driver' , 87 924s |

I agree, 3rd gear is probably the most fun for me in these cars. 4th still has a reasonable amount of power, but it's usually 3rd for winding roads and such. My old 944 had a MPG gauge on it; I found it somewhat helpful for adjusting my driving when I wanted to conserve gas. With the 924S it's just a matter of using some sense and guessing. _________________ 1988 924S Navy Blue - Phone Dials |
