my suspension is like the CGT, steel front arms and alloy rear ams.
what do you guys have on your cars?
i need something that is realdy available for purchase and not very expensive. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

Define "not very expensive". As in, give us a price range you want to stay in. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Personally, I wouldn’t put coil-over shocks on the ally rear trailing arms. If you really gona put springs in, go to steel arms as they can take more stress! But up to you I guess!
Cheep coilovers –
http://www.vwheritage.com/ssp/Shock-Absorbers/?templateID=ssp
SSP Adjustable Coil-over shock, for rear early VW Beetle part no (AC513001) £80 the pair (Cheep as Chips)
423mm extended / 272mm compressed / 12.5mm Dia hole in bush at each end.
The bushes are slightly shorter than Porsche 924 bushes so you will need to put a few washers either side to stop lateral movement.
not a gr8 photo, but here they are on my car.

what make are those shocks ?
are they inserts? are they rebuildable?
there are people who race rear alloys with coilovers and no index bars.
i want something that just stiffens the back a bit...i dont want a race feel on my car. so i dont want to put all the weigth of the car on the shock mount...the index bars will still be there and the coilovers will just be helpers.
compared to the normal 924 setup how stiff would you say they are?
price range is no more than 300 euros shipped for the front.
PS: Dan, check your PM _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

What spring rate do you want in the front? You will then have to figure out what the combined spring rate at the rear will be with your torsion bar + a coil over. Here is the authoritative source for that info.
There is an ebay seller that is selling the 924/944 Mookeh front coilover setup, and I've noticed they've run several auctions recently starting the bid on those at $.01. They have three active auctions right now with a Buy-it-now of $199 + shipping. Here's one of 'em.
When I asked about them, they indicated the springs are 2.5" x 8" at 400#. This is probably your cheapest option, but 400# may be too stiff for the street. You can get replacement Eibach springs in 50# increments, and they're not that expensive for just the spring itself, I think in the range of $60-$70 each.
I do have a pair of used front coil over sleeves available for sale if it's of any interest. You would need to source the springs, the upper perch, and the locking collar, but it might be worth investigating as an option. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

9xx girl, do you run them with the torsion bar still or have you removed the torion bars? _________________ Kroggers

???? Dont Know
| Quote: | | are they rebuildable? | Dont think so, you can buy them indidualy at £40. Not worth rebuilding at that price.
| Quote: | | there are people who race rear alloys with coilovers and no index bars | Yes, but you dont get speed hump or pot holes on a race track. You want to use these on roads ok
| Quote: | | compared to the normal 924 setup how stiff would you say they are? | Stiffer, (its very sujective) but i left my torsion bars in.
Adding coilovers will raise your ride hight so you may have to re-index. I managed to compensate for this by adjusting the big esentric nut ont the spring plate

| these are Beetle shocks. They wont go on the front!
But for £80 / 90 Euros / $130 US for a rear pair you wont get cheeper.
Half that price in the US _________________ 924 (84) N/A 2 ltr - 5 Speed - BLACK - Project (looking for 200BHP, any ideas!)

From the above-linked website:
| Quote: | | The lower spring mount allows for a small amount of tension adjustment (C-spanner included for this). |
So no, NOT height adjustable. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

I don't understand why you feel like you need coilovers in the rear for a street driven car. IMO, you'd be better off investing in a good pair of Bilsteins. Coilovers in front I understand. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

yep, but if you are gona add a spring in the rear set up the only adjustment you are gona get from the coilover is in the upward direction, unless you re-index or adjust out on the spring plate.
sticking a spring in between the body and the trailing arm isn't gona lower the car is it (don't think too hard!)
You have about 20mm on hight adjustment on the spring plate.

they do have a small amount of tension adjustment which does raise the car as you wind the tention on but, this is what i wanted. I ftted 16" wheels that are 11" (255mm) wide. The tyre was rubbing in the arch. this coil over gave me a bit more hight and reduced the overall travel in the suspention due to hardness, given the range of UK driving conditions and range of road quality! _________________ 924 (84) N/A 2 ltr - 5 Speed - BLACK - Project (looking for 200BHP, any ideas!)

If you have the right kind of setup, it can:
Installed:
These came with the appropriate spring perches and hats, and are designed to be run without t-bars, and therefore offer fully adjustable ride height with the appropriate length rear spring (2.5"x6" IIRC). These could certainly be adjusted to a neutral position with t-bars installed, but not the ones that you have on your car. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

agreed
| Quote: | | These could certainly be adjusted to a neutral position with t-bars installed |
but adjustment is only in the upward direction from then on. They could not reduce ride hight without re indexing or spring plate adjustment! _________________ 924 (84) N/A 2 ltr - 5 Speed - BLACK - Project (looking for 200BHP, any ideas!)

Agreed...just amplifying your point that many of the rear coilover options actually result in heightening the rear ride height (such as yours), but there are more expensive options available that do not. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |
