I recently brought home a Porsche 924 that had been sitting for over 13 years. I know the challenges of truly restoring this are slim, but I am very into just getting this to start and work. I bought for a price of $500 so not much invested yet. A few questions if you all don't mind. The year of my Porsche is the greatest question: It is a four speed 924, from my research that was only with the initial 1976, but as well when the 924 was brought to the US it was brought in July of 1976 as a 1977 model. Unless I'm wrong my Porsche wasn't built for the US rather an earlier import? I really don't know how to determine and if any help can be brought that would be amazing.

I've got the gas tank emptied and after sitting that long all that came out was vaseline. Is there any cleaner that can be poured in with new gas when the time comes to fully flush the rest out?

Any overall suggestions for the this project? I'm draining all the fluids before even turning this over, but any other suggestions would be a great help?

To determine the true year and market of your car, put the VIN in here:

Hey, that sounds like a pretty cool find.Hopefully you documented it with pics when you got it, I just got back my '69 Honda 90cc motorcycle
that has been sitting for almost 25 years. It was given to my bro-inlaw back in 85 and he never did anything with it.
I took pics of it buried in debris before pulling it out.Just what I need is another project.
Don't ever think you can't get something back looking good, just takes alot of time and a little money.

Or a little time and a LOT of money, whichever the case may be.

Thanks everyone and I am in northeastern wisconsin, close to the Appleton area.

Does anyone know how to make sure the timing belt is in place? And as well with the timing belt will it crush the pistons if it comes off? And lastly on my Porsche at least the lights are having troubles coming up, there seems to be a hose that keeps getting in the way behind the left light, also on the right light it seems to almost be scrapping on its holding place when it goes up and down, is this normal? I assume not, but wondering if there is any adjusting there can be done?

Pop the valve cover and see if the cam and lifters are shot or not. Don't even turn the motor over until you get some oil on the lobes and lifters.

You can look at the back of the cam gear as you turn the motor by hand to see if it is turning.

But don't bother, the belt is a VW part and is cheap and is way past due to be changed.

The valves will not hit the pistons if the motor is stock.

Just placed an order for a new Fuel Filter and a Valve cover gasket. I'll post pictures after this is installed. I am looking for a bushings piece that connects the throttle cable to the casing. It seems to have broke.

Thanks everyone for your help, hopefully pictures will be coming very soon. Just to give you an idea it was originally silver I believe, but was repainted black which is the color now. Pretty awesome cars these are.
