Unlike some cars of their era, do 924's use the same key for the ignition, hatch and doors? I'm curious because end of my key is about to break off (hanging by a thread, literally!) and I wonder if it would be easier for the lock smith to take the door handle off and have him make a new key based on the lock cylinder in the door.

I thought almost all cars from that era had the same key for (nearly) everything. My '82 Sigma did, as did my '71 Mini.

A locksmith will greatly appreciate a cylinder to work from as well as the key that is supposed to work in it. I know this because my brother has been a locksmith for years.

Wade.

Maybe it was the 90s then. Good to know though. I'll find out tomorrow and let everyone know.

Normal problem is the car has been broken into and the lock replaced. My old car had 3 keys, one for the doors, one for the ignition and one for the boot/trunk!

A full lock set is expensive, a single lock isn't!

My driver's side lock is opened by a flat head screwdriver , not good, I'm going to try to swap it to the passenger side, fill the keyhole with epoxy and take the hatch barrel to get a key made. Hopefully it's the same key .

Got it done. Took the entire door handle off and they made keys for me there at the lock smith. There's a number code on the inside of the door handle itself that tells what position the tumbler pins should be in, I guess. I got 2 keys made for $22.

The catch is that now I have a key for the drivers side door and the ignition.. Apparently the passenger side door and hatch are different! Also, whats the little keyhole next to the drivers door for?

Factory Installed Car Alarm. …Since you are not using it, it might be a source to rebuild a fresh new lock?

Cheers, Harm.

Ah very interesting about the factory car alarm. When the restoration is further along, I'll check into that.

Also, it turns out that the new key does indeed with for all the locks on the car (except for that fancy car alarm lock). However, I can't open the hatch. I can get the key to turn all the way, and I see the mechanism in the hatch moving but, the hatch won't budge. Am I missing something?

Are you lifting the hatch when the key is turned?

You are turning the key to the left, aren't you??? It seems backwards to me, but the hatch key turns to the left to release. At least on my 80 931 it does.

Yup, I sure am. I'm lifting up while turning the key too. It's probably just rusty or seized. The crummy part is that on the inside of the hatch, there are spider webs so thick that it looks like it is foggy back there. Not really looking forward to climbing back there to figure out whats up with the locking mechanism
