Greetings all,
Had a reasonably trouble free run with the porsche for the last month or so so haven't been around here much.
Anyway, the alternator belt started screaching last night, i thought would just tighten it up, looked under the bonnet, and there's no adjustment I can find?? It looks like the bottom bracket from near the harmonic balancer to the alternator is a home made job. Does anyone have pics of their bracket so I know what I'm looking for?
Also LOVE the back window on todays car, who's is it? _________________ '78 924

The adjustment is the bottom bracket which should be slightly curved and have a long slotted hole.
Unfotunately mine broke because the top mounts had perished and twisted the alt.
Could be the reason yours is home made?
I got a bottom bracket from another car and bent it 90deg to fit. (holden 202 I think)
I also replaced the top mount rubbers with urethane suspension bits from a landcruiser _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

Yep, that sounds like it's likely, I have already replaced the top bushes so will just go to making a bracket with adjustment unless someone hass one for sale? _________________ '78 924

I am having this same problem. My Alternator brackets are about ready to give. These things seem to be damn super rare or something. Is there anyone that currently has some for sale, or am I able to use something as a replacement? _________________ 1979 Porsche 924- Snailshell

i got fed up with having to tighten the belt even with new bushes in,so i went the solid route.
i took a wheel nut and ground the edges till it fitted inside the mounting bracket,i then drilled the nut to take the mounting bolt sleeve, took about 15min to do.
and i use my car on a daily basis,no more screaming or slipping fan belt.
can't understand why porsche went that route ??? |

it will definately solve the problem, don't think i've ever come across another car with a rubber bush on the alternater mounting bracket ?
can't see any reason for them going that route. |

The adjustable bracket was missing when I got my car. The p/o went and installed an alt from a '76 camaro in the place of the stock bosch one, and inadvertantly hacked the original mounts off, replacing them with some angle iron and sheetmetal mounted on the inner fender.
After looking for a replacement for a while, I decided to mount a stock alt where the AC unit would usually go, and source some heim joints and all-thread to make an adjustable bracket. or something along those lines. I haven't really made it that far. _________________ proud owner of a 1979 924 Sebring Edition with a 931 trans that looks horrible but somehow runs... |

Have a look for 'hockey puck fix'. Works like a charm, but maybe only with brackets that aren't toast.

I am having the same exact problem with mine. I at first thought it was my alternator, and after I took the whole thing off and cleaned everything up, I thought that I had fixed whatever it was, but now, about 2 weeks later it has started the damn squealing again. I can get it to stop if i turn the lights off, start accelerating, then flip them back on, but that shit gets so annoying haha.
It is definitely a mount though. What do you guys think I should do, make a hockey puck fix or just fabricate a solid mount of some sort? |

You could be getting squealing due to a glazed belt, brought on by slipping due to being too loose. _________________ 78 924 NA

^ Yes, caused by the stupid lord mount flexing too far 'cause it should have been a hockey-puck hardness in the first place! _________________ '88 944 Auto - may or may not resurrect |
