A guy was driving down the road one afternoon and noticed just in time that one of his wheels was coming loose. He had barely enough time to slow down enough to not kill himself and jerked the car off to the side of the road just as his wheel passed him on the right. "Crap!" he yells, and takes off down the road after his wheel...

He finally finds it in some bushes and starts to roll it back to the car. On his way, having been engrossed in his own disaster, he finally notices he's broken down in front the local insane asylum -- and one of the "guests" is shadowing him on her side of the fence, watching his every move.

Creeped out, he starts to try to figure out what to do -- he has his wheel but no lug nuts to hold it on. As he ponders the situation, the guest pipes up "Hey buddy, whatsa matter, having a little car trouble?". More than a little irritated he spouts "Um yeah. I've lost my wheel and all my lug nuts and I can't figure out what to do now..."

The guest ponders the situation for a moment and says "Well, why don't you take one lug nut off of each of the other wheels and use them to hold on the wheel you lost. Then you can drive to the auto parts store and replace the ones you lost!"

The broken down driver is dumbfounded. "That's BRILLIANT" he exclaims... "How did you come up with that???"

The guest quietly responded "Geez dude, I may be crazy but I'm not stupid"

I've done it twice, both times in an early falcon and both times due to breakages, snapped a stub axel and an axel. Not a fun event in a vehical without a split brake system as both resulted in no brakes luckly both events happened on country roads with plenty of road to roll to a stop. And yes both events resulted in upgrades to the failed components.

never happend to me but....it happend to a guy i know

my father's pickup truck broke down on the road so he waited for a car to pass to give him a ride to the next town to get a towing or mechanic to fix the car. The guy who stopped to pick him up was driving an identiacal pickup truck. So they start for the next town. My father was sad that the car broke down on him and was gazing into the landscape.
At one moment, he tells, he was stunned by an interesting thing...he saw a wheel overtake them and go into the corn field. A couple of seconds later they both realize that the rear wheel came off.

Fixing my wife's old Daytona turbo, quite a few years ago. I was doing it with my mom's then-husband and a friend of his who knew a LOT about cars. Of course, I didn't want to look like a total idiot, so I helped out as much as I could. Over the corse of events we decided to scrap the car rather than fix it - the thing was a death trap - and we were right at the wrecking yard. My stepfather's pal asked me if I'd torqued the wheel lugs (should have been my first clue) so he could drive the car into the yard and we could be done with it. I thought I had, and said so. So what happens? The wheels fall off before the car gets to the wrecker. Not even 200 yards! I never, ever heard the end of that one!

When I started racing, I learned quickly that we need to triple-check the lugs.

A friend and mentor, who'd been racing his Saturn for some time, always double-checked his. Then he very nearly lost a wheel at speed - noticed the vibration and pitted to find nuts loose.

So now, we triple-check them, instead of double-check them. We check them every time the car goes out, too.

In spite of all this, we still nearly lost a rear wheel this past season - wife was racing. Not her fault at all, nor a loose lug; rather, the end of the stub axle sheared off entirely!!

As I discovered this early in the morning, it caused me some confusion while I tried to figure out how to tighten the wheel/loose bearing... I felt really stupid, 'cause I couldn't figure out where the axle nut had gone... just didn't look right... till I realized it'd sheared right off...
