Hello,
New 931 owner here. I've already asked a bunch of questions and gotten some great help here. This car is new to me in a bunch of ways(CIS, European, rear transaxle) but familiar in that it's a turbo car. I had a 97 turbo Miata with a Garrett t25 and FMIC. (Dyno's about 230hp from what I remeber)
this is the car I bought:

And this is some of the strangeness I found so far.

The cars history is unknown (bad move, I know) but it seems like it has been cared for. I guess I'll find out the hard way
Thanks for having this board and thanks for the willingness to spend the time at a keyboard helping out a total stranger.

The car you purchased looks like a very nice example.
That is water mixed with oil. It could be just vapor if the car has been siting and their was the ability for water to get into or condense into the system. If the car runs and can get to operating temperature the water could evaporate from the oil and all could be good, but be prepared for a possible head gasket, as a minimum.
How does the oil look, is it clean and tranaprent, and not a milky color? How does the coolant look, any sign of oil in it? _________________ "Never get out of the boat. Absolutely goddamn right. Unless you are goin' all the way."

+1^
That's the breather air/oil seperator, right? ..Right.
It's completely normal to find both oil, and water (formed by condensation) in there.

The coolant looks good, the oil looks good. (oil looks kinda thin but I think its synthetic). Both smell OK and look new, very green coolant and light "oil" color, no gas smell. The previous owner never really drove the car and PO before that is unknown except that they supposedly spent 3k in unknown repairs on the car. Maybe a head gasket was repaired and that is the residual remains?
Maybe just 30years of gunk buildup? Maybe new oil and coolant to mask a problem? Who knows.
I have the car in a bunch of pieces right now waiting on vacuum elbows and a CIS tester from Ideola. I'm cleaning up under the hood to get a baseline on whats what. (condition, hacks, and what does what) I was having some poor running issues the second it got home but I hope to have everything back together in a month or so.
I'm taking everyones sage advice and replacing all the vacuum elbows and lines, as well as a checking the fuel system. I'll take it from there.
Btw, is the intake manifold a straight bolt on/off? I'd like to remove it to get to the water/vacuum stuff at the back of the head, and give it a good cleaning. _________________ 1982 931- Stock with MBC at 8psi

BTW, since your air/oil separator is apart, just a note that although you can probably find a new or used one, they are reusuable. I've peeked inside mind and put it back together using silicone. I used silicone rather than a permanent adhesive so I could get it apart again, in case I wanted to inspect what was going on in there. With silicone, you probably have to be ginger with it, however the repair worked well for me. _________________ "Never get out of the boat. Absolutely goddamn right.
