Lately I've been toying with the idea of performing an engine conversion in our '81 VW Westfalia and I've pretty much narrowed it down to either a 911 based engine or a 924 Turbo engine.
Now the 911 is pretty straightfoward as it will bolt up to the 091 transaxle with a modified flywheel from Kennedy, and a support for the rear engine mount would need to be fabricated and the oil tank and cooler with lines installed.
However, the 924 Turbo engine requires a bit more, and here is where I'm seeking some information. I believe that I would be able to use the bellhousing, engine support bar, and possibly the clutch setup from the South African built Vanagons that utilized the Audi 5 cylinder engine since (and please correct me if I'm wrong) the 924 Turbo engine is from the same "family" and everything should bolt up nicely.
If this is true, I would like to know if the bits that I need for this conversion can be readily sourced in South Africa, or possibly elsewhere if these Vanagons were ever exported out of South Africa (either new, but used is fine also, especially if the bits are in good condition and less expensive ), and what the cost may be.
If anybody has any input or can help me out with this issue, I would be most appreciative. Thanks! _________________ '95 BMW 318i/5 ..."Pearl"
