|

My fuel pump recently went bad on my '78, I have the replacement and I have it installed however the pump cant get any of the gas out of the tank. The line behind the pump is bone dry, I've tried priming it by pouring gas into that line but to no avail. Is there any way I can prime the fuel pump so that it will have enough suction to start getting the gas moving? _________________ 89' Ranger with a custom front end and 924 bucket seats

I recently pulled my fuel pump, and was surprised to see only a drip of fuel come out of the prefilter. I was prepared for a deluge, because the only thing that should have been slowing the fuel down was the prefilter.
As it turned out, the tank was full of sludge. I had to pull the sender to figure that out. Poke a rod down into the sump, if you can, and see if it's full of sludge.
Probably, you'll need to take off the plate at the bottom of the sump, and start digging out the sludge. Plan on a can of brake cleaner, nitrile gloves and compressed air to blow out the fuel line fitting. The sludge doesn't dissolve in gas, but brake cleaner will dissolve it. I pulled about a cup of sticky brown sludge from the tank sump. I bet this is what killed your fuel pump. |

I was under the impression that the 78 didn't have a in tank pump because that's what the tec section says. Ill try looking for the sludge in the tank but its brand new gas, the pre filter is clean and I can hear bubbles when I blow into the hose to the tank. Its rainy here today so I won't get to it till tomorrow but thanks all for the input. _________________ 89' Ranger with a custom front end and 924 bucket seats
