Hi Guys,

I am sure this topic has been covered in the past, I have searched with no luck!

I am currently trying to get the pop-up head light motor to work after a complete re-assembly, does it turn through 180deg to raise the lights then 180deg to lower them?

Do the lights stay up by the tension of the springs? as mine just flop back down when not connected to the motor.

I got a feeling I have stuffed up the install should have paid more attention when I pulled them out 2-years ago!

I am getting 12V at the motor, however is wont turn.....but thats another issue!

Any help is appreciated

The lights stay up because the motor and its gearbox holds them up. Disconnect the motor from the bracket and they drop.

OK, I fixed the problem, just good old dirty contactors at the light switch.

And then ....... the headlights wouldn't work

Once I actually found the “Headlight Relay” which is part of the indicator / high beam stalk!!! (found that thanks to other posts on this forum) it was a matter of cleaning the contact points with some fine paper, and finish off with some contact cleaner/lubricant.

As my Haynes Manual is mainly for the USA model and I have never had a fully operating 924, can someone tell me when the “ROW” model built-in driving lights are suppose to come on ?
My headlights are popping up with low beam & high beam, but I cant the get the built-in driving lights to operate. (they do work by jumpering at the dedicated relay in cluster with all the other relays).

Driving lights should come on with high beam BUT......... there is a switch near the ash tray which must be on.

That doesn't look like a relay to me. It just looks like a switch.

There's a relay on the lifting motor itself, you know.

I checked it this morning, I only have two switches at the ash tray. one for rear wiper and the other for electric mirror left/right.

Looks like I'll be chasing the wiring from the driving light relay to see where it ends up!

Wade,

Hence my confusion, the Haynes manual calls it a “head light relay”. Not really what I was looking for.
This is the “relay” that switches as well as carries the current directly to the headlights both the low and high beam.
On flash when both low & high beams are on the thing has to carry 19Amps.

The relay you refer to (plugged into the side of headlight motor) is only to raise the head lights.

The two have completely separate feeds.

No such thing as a headlight relay on most cars.
There is a jumper where the relay is supposed to be on the fuse board and the column switch does all the work.

My car has four switches near the ash tray.
Mirrors, rear wiper, headlight wash and driving lights.
(mirrors dont work but the switch is there.)

OK, i have got it all sorted.

As I previously mentioned if I jumper terminals 30 & 87 at the driving light relay the driving lights come on so all is well on the power side of things.

I traced the control connection from relay terminal 85 (terminal 86 is earth) straight back to the good old column switch. Somewhere in between I found a male to female connector with corrosion on it, cleaned it up and it all works.

Looks like the setup on my car is driving lights go on when highbeams are on. It would be easy to put a switch in as Ozzie’s UK spec car has.

All this kind of shows up in the Haynes manual but is mostly incomplete.
I will post up my own schematic as it might help someone out in the future.

This is how my "extra driving lights" are wired, they only come on with the high beam. This can be altered at the male/female connector as this controls the relay.

Hope this helps someone out in future, sure would have saved me some time!
