If I had seen these before I would have pumped out the N/A intake flange. Class is over so i no longer have access to the tools required.
Thanks for posting these up though man, it just made my day. |

Hey Min
Been thinking about this for a while. Were you able to confirm HRc 60 ? I have also been wondering exactly what material would we choose (Edit: Oh I see the material now off to the left sorry, looked too fast). I am actually willing to try and make a set and run them.
Drawing looks good.
Edit: Do we know exactly what material is used in the camshafts and of course hardness. This would dictate the material and hardness choice of the tappet. The rest is imitation of the original modded as you show for valve stem caps for adjustment.

Material and level of heat treatment were design decisions. Bigger issue is that the top surface should probably have a better surface finish than I've specified on those drawings, I had intended to polish(mirror) that surface after having them manufactured.

Camshafts are made of cast iron usually. Level of hardness is dictated by which component you wish to have wear first. Camshaft, or lifters.
I selected D2 becuase it is a inexpensive tool steel that should hold up in our conditions. If money was no issue I would have selected something with more molybdenum in it (better wear). The heat treatment was specified based on a few other design decisions such as the hardness of cast iron camshafts etc (and the camshaft design book I got my hands on). Also note that the stock lifters are chromized which can range in hardness, I'll have to look it up again (depending on weither it was soft or hard chromizing). I designed these lifters more than 6 months ago now. So I forget all the fine details.
I had intended to have these made, and then use them in my car before posting this drawing. Hasn't worked out that way.

For me the biggest cost will be tooling possibly if I don't already have the stuff stocked (I use all Sandvik). I am also in the same boat as you that I research heavily and then ignore for months at a time but I have a tappet research file on my desktop. One book I am reading states an apparent rule of thumb for durability of the follower that it is 5HRc harder than the cam. PM me your email and I will email to you in PDF.
I was even think DLC coating and such. Of course that all depends how well things actually turn out and then I will decide on the investment. _________________ 1980 931 since 1989

The main reason for me has been that I have been flooded with schoolwork. These followers are the last thing I need to get sorted out before I can repair my car. I sent you an email.

My main concern on coatings is the longevity. If the coating starts to fail locally due to the high level of stresses, it will spread quickly across the face of the lifter. Or pitting will occur.

Fuel Rail isn't finished at all, I've got a 3D model of the new bracket system that I am currently fabricating, also working on building a valve stem grinding tool so I can get my valves into adjustment. I have over 700 megs in my 3d modelling folder since I've been out of school for the summer. Design and fabricated full exhaust systems including headers, etc. Fun stuff. This is just my porsche stuff.
