Does the tach bounce while trying to start?
Ignition switch?
Fuel pump? _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

Certainly. My 88 924se had random no start issues for 3 years before I pinpointed it to a weak speed sensor. The problem was so hit and miss that it was hard to locate, months of great starting between occasional no-starts. Recently my 87 924s started dying randomly only to start again after a few minutes, it turned out to be the refrence sensor.
Flywheel sensors is just one offhand suggestion. Your problem has a broad list of possibilities, I have had intermittent running issues in the past from
Bad fpr
poor sensor connections
Bad speed and refrence sensors
corrosion in the fuse box
poor dme ground
faulty dme
poor fuel pump ground
faulty fuel pmp
faulty dme relay
alarm box problems
afm problems
These are things that I have direct dealings with and many of them multiple times, but there are lots of possibilities beyond this. Your best bet is systematic testing of the fuel and ignition systems. Each part needs to be proved to work. _________________ 87 924s

well ill update.....
I had the car die on me several days ago and figured id give that relay by the battary a good knock.... and it fired right back up.... died again about three block... hit that relay again.. fired right off...
I replaced said relay and has been three days now with no issues. Have not ruled the problem solved... but will keep an eye on it.
The starting is less rough as well... still harder than i would like... so im looking at the ref sensors next. This weekend was shot for working on the car at all so i hope i can get some done this week.
The only sensors i believe still not new in the car now.. under the hood anyway.. are the two ref. sensors and an Idle control valve
Everything else now is new and car is running great _________________ 1987 924s "Enzo"

well the car died on me again... and i gave the new relay a good knock and what not.. and it started again.
Does everyone else or anyone else have a relay sitting by their battary? Im still not sure what it is for. It has 1 wire running down to the coil. and one grounds out right to where it sits.
Just makes me wonder how it would randomly die even after i replaced it, but can still knock it and it fires off. If i dont knock it.... it takes close to three to five minutes to fire back up...
I dont think its a hot/ cold start issue either since it has no rhyme or reason to it. The problem can happen after starting and driving a block.. or happen after driving for 20 minutes... or not happen at all
What about the Idle Control Valve? I started to notice from time to time my idle will shoot up to almost 2 grand when i park it... and stays there till i shut the car off..
now the hard start still happens and have a new starter on it as well (old one died). Its not as hard but still way harder than it should be.... and its not constant.
Im going to replace the ground wire from the bat to the block as well as the batt. compartment here shortly and will be ordering the new ref sensors shortly as well.... _________________ 1987 924s "Enzo"
