It's great to see it coming along.
I have been avoiding doing the cage for 2 years now and I have to finally do it.
what did you use to make the bends look so good?
I am worried that my pipe bender may leave more than the 90% rule elongation.
Any suggestions after your install?
regards Shane. _________________ 79 924. 100kph + wall at Mt Panorama = Gone.

Hi Shane
The rear was one I bought which was pre-fabed. We had to put a lot of reinforcing into the wheel arches area as Ive read on the boards that its not a good place for the rear bars to sit. We have a lot of 3mm plate around there and have bought it down to the box section. In hindsight, it would have been a lot easier to make that from scratch as well.
I bought all the front steel off one of the local guys here that makes ( really beautiful ) roll cages. We then got some old water pipe and made a template for the front legs with a normal pipe bender. The roll cage guy then bent the front legs ( $50 each ) on his mandrell bender to the tempalte we made. It took a fair bit of mucking about to get the shape right.
I followed the CAMS rule book as closely as possible hence the really big mounts we made on the box sections, but Ive since seen other "interpretations" which passed fine and didnt use such big mounts. There seems to be a lot of deliberate grey areas and contradictions in the roll cage rules. My mate has a Datsun 1600 and bought a BOND cage and only used one plate on the floor without the "feet" for the legs for instance.
All up the cage cost less than $1000. If I do it again though, I would make the whole thing from scratch, and start with a stripped and dipped bare shell. Even once we had cleaned off the galvanising the welder still spits and carries on in those areas.
We`re putting the last bars in this afternoon, so I will post some more pictures tonight. _________________ To finish first, you must first finish! |

Oh, and one more tip from my panel beater mate. When the car sits on axle stands it "droops" quite a lot. Older cars like the 924 arent to bad but modern cars ( particulalry Falcadores ) are terrible for it. If you have it on the stands for any length of time make sure you check that the doors are still closing properly... or even better, sit it on a cradle. _________________ To finish first, you must first finish! |

Finally, the cage is in...

Hindsight is a wonderful thing... I dont regret buying this car in the slightest, I do however, think I should have stripped it completely and had it sandblasted, and then built the cage from scratch. I thought we could just install a cage, fix the bodywork and have a bit of fun club racing it... _________________ To finish first, you must first finish! |

Some more, um, progress....
Well, the engine was leaking more and more each time we started it, and I wanted to paint the engine bay anyway so it was a good excuse to pull the motor
And I once it got to this height.. we realised where the leak was coming from, um, the oil filter was loose... doh.. oh well
I really want to fill this hole with a turbo...

I must say though.. pulling a 924 motor is MUCH easier than pulling the motor from my other project car...

And yes, Ive measured it all since I pulled the motor and the Quad Cam S4 Engine would easily fit inside a 924 engine bay, theres actually more room in there than there is in the 928... and no, Im not going to try!
Besides which, the quad cam motor isnt all that good for a racing car anyway. _________________ To finish first, you must first finish! |

The steaming pile of excrement that is the wiring loom. This is going in the bin. I`m thinking of a universal wiring kit.
Oddly, with the doors off, its begining to look like a racing car...

And for those that like this kind of stuff... the 928S has a new exhaust...
Its even throatier than the old one
