Hello Gentleman + Girls

i just get my hands on a 1982 NA 924. It sat for 7 years with no start.

I need some infos how to re-birth the engine !

Oil change? Plugs out and turn it by hand ?

What are youre suggestions to bring it back to live?

Any hints?

drain the tank, before you crank.

I just went through the exact same thing on a '80 sitting for 7 years. Picked it up cheap on craigs list. I'm driving the car everyday now but if I had to do it again here is what I would do:

First and most important resist trying to throw the car together just so you can drive it. I wanted to drive mine really bad and it is running very well now but I would do things a bit different if I had to do it all over again.

Do a quick compression check and make sure the engine is even sound. If you have to pull the motor that would change a lot of things. Disable the fuel pump you DO NOT want to pump that dirty old fuel into the fuel dist.

Get yourself a service manual, your going to need one anyway. If you search hard enough including this site you can get the factory manual in pdf. Read the manual and this site until you know how the CIS system works. These boards are absolutly awesome for information. What ever you need to know is on here somewhere.

If there was fuel in the tank for seven years, like mine, Pull the tank out and clean it. This will save you hours of pulling your hair out and most likely a HP fuel pump from debris in the tank getting into it. I don't know if the 82 has the intank fuel pump but if it does clean that up and test (make sure it's pumping - it's a low pressure pump just to create some head pressure on the HP pump.

Remove the HP pump clean and test. Make sure the check valve is on the outlet side and that is working.

Remove the lines from the fuel acc. or remove the fuel acc all together. Check it for leaks, rust holes etc.

Remove the fuel feed line and return line at the fuel dist and blow air (backflush the fuel lines) It wouldn't be a bad idea to blow out all the fuel lines - injector lines and WUR

Search injector cleaning on this site. Wire open the injectors and soak them in Chevron with Techron over night. I would get two bottles right away, when it's running put the other one in the fuel tank.

Remove the WUR, Take it apart clean it and make sure the O-ring under the thin metal shim is OK and not degraded. If your carefull taking it apart you can reuse the gaskets etc. Search adjustable WUR on this site. You could skip this step but it's well worth it, and your probably going to have to adjust it anyway.

Remove the fuel dist (make sure the pin doesn't fall out) Make sure it moves totally free in it's bore. If not clean it and it probably will. If it doesn't your going to need a fuel dist. Make sure the roller on the air flow arm that the pin rides on is free and it spins.

Search this site for cleaning grounds. You could skip this step but I wouldn't after sitting for 7 years they probably need some attention. And they could give you all kinds of problems in the future.

After all that I would change the oil, check coolant and put some fresh fuel in the tank.

Either rent, make or buy a CIS fuel pressure gauge. There is NOTHING more important than the proper fuel pressure for this engine to run good. Cold and hot control and system pressure, don't even try to start it untill ypur cold control pressure and system pressure are correct. Make sure the system is holding pressure, that the fuel acc and check valve are ok. Again search this site or look in the service manual for the instructions

When all your pressures are right fire it up, check the timing and adjust the A/F mixture if needed. And don't forget to pour a bottle Chevron in the tank before you fill up.

I don't think I missed anything, it seems like a lot of work but it really isn't to bad. By the end you will know your car well and it should run great!

Heheh, I've done my fair share, now the rest of you need to get with the program

Luvmy80-924, that is a great writeup, good job. And I totally agree with the Techron thing. That stuff works magic.

Was it stored in- or outside?
About four years ago I got me a spare engine.
I knew the original car/location and that it only had electrical problems before it got parked
outside for five years. The owner lost interest and got the car wrecked;
The crusher just managed saving the engine for me
…Std cilinder 86,50

Although your “barn find” is in one piece, here is my experience on reviving a dead engine.

Before I turned over the engine I removed the cam cover and oiled (sticky transmission oil)
the camshaft and cam followers so it wouldn't start eating each other away.

Give the cam belt tooth a visual inspection (remove belt cover) and asure it will allow
rolling by hand and is still at a right tension. Be very careful at the first turn!
You never know… either valves or… flywheel or… gremlins…

See if you can find TDC on cilinder one and check the flywheel alignment, ignition coil
(spark distributor), cam gear wheel and the V-belt pully mark. Mark these since it might
become of use when you'll have to rebuild the bl33din' lump. And you'll have a better idea
of what the engine/valves should be doing. …Lets hope it does.

What I did was (erect the engine, held in place with a few pieces of wood on the pallet it
got delivered, and) poor some diesel (red) through the plug holes so it would sit on top of
the pistons, all at the same height. (Used a straw through the sparkplughole). Let it soak
and leak through/by during the night. It will eat through the old oil, gunk and carbon
build up between the rings (wishfull thinking inhere!) and not just evaporate.
The dragged down diesel will make it easier to flush the old oil out too.
…no cranking/fire till then, please, sir.

I already did a leak down test on the cilinders before I went through this
and the test on the second day was a lot more what I was hoping for.
Downside: It showed there was something wrong on cilinder one; a ceased piston ring.
I ended up taking the head off and replacing all four sets of piston rings.
…so not really what you'd wanted to hear

My hope is yours was stored inside during that seven year period.
Once she's up and running you should give both
engine oil and cooling system a very-very good flush!
Lots of rubbish came out that cooling system/block(?!)

Take your time Nobbi!
How is red doing?
Regards, Harm.

I'm game for another one. I want a 931, just missed one on craigs list for $1300, Body looked great but it didn't run it was sitting for a few years also. My 80 was $900 on craigs list, $300 for rims and tires on craigs list, $100 for 4 wheel adapters on ebay plus a couple bottles of Chevron, oil filters ect. I have about $1400 total into it, Looks and drives like a million bucks. But I know the 931 would put a little more fun in the drive. I'll find one sooner or later and then maybe give the 80 to the wife..........maybe.

Hello all,

i am just back from the barn. "It" was still untouched. I do have the door keys and i opend the car. Then i walked back to the hatch, key fits and
a miracle!!The shocks from the hatch opened the trunk with now problem...!!

Then i opend the hood for the first time......hm, eveything seems to be never touched by a DIY čr. The cooling hose for the alternator is in place. Also the timing belt cover. The oil dip-stick shows it is half full.

Pulled the spark-plugs and the owner used the wrong brand and temp.-range.Thats why the look deep black and oily.

I replaced the distributor cap and the rotor, checked the cables.Looks good.

The chassis has no dings or dangs and looks great. The door sills are like new.
The interiour is in good shape, just small cracks in the dash (2!) from the window to the opening for th air vents.

The seats are dark brown with white stripes and also very comfortable.
The passenger side has one long seam on the cushion open and needs some sewing. No problem.Rear is untouched,

The trunk jalousie is like new and works great.

"It" is equipt with a aftermarket rear spoiler (ZENDER) and a towing hook.

Also a aftermarket "1980" style sunroof is installed. (Works!)

And a Blaupunkt original Radio is still in place.

I cleaned the grounds and the battery cables and installed a fresh loaded battery

The ventilator turned on (?) and i found that the temp switch on top of the radiator was gone and the cables are bridged.

Rear light and front collision lights turned on, main lights kept down because the key is not in ignition position.

In front of the engine i found the remains (bones) of a big bird.Like a chicken or a fasan.

Cool.

Thats it for today,

Nobbi
