I have a 924 N/A which has been fitted with 944 hubs and brakes and loads of GRP to make it look like a 944 or a 924 Special. It is now fitted with Porsche 5 stud Cookie cutter style wheels.

Since buying this car a couple of months ago I have replaced the Struts, Springs, Strut tops, Brake Pins and Springs and it has had Disks and Pads recently.
After replacing the worn bottom ball joints tonight it still has a bad shake above 55MPH and a lot of rattle coming from the drivers side wheel.
Their is no play in the wheel bearings but I am begining to suspect them as I have just about run out of things to change.
Can anyone possibly help me as it is seriously spoiling the car.

Tie-rod ends (inner/outer, check them both)

rotate the tires and see if the problem changes.

Hows your speedometer cable? Lubricated it recently?

Otherwise, check bushings, sway bar mounts, etc.

All the bushes are good.
I am now most certain it is the wheel bearing.
When turning left at speed their is a nastry graunching noise.
This morning removed outer bearing and repacked with grease.
But it still makes a noise I reckon the inner bearing is dying.

I was going to say bushings, but see that you say they are all good.

I do have this to say though:
Even if the A arm bushings appear good, and feel solid, they could still be bad. No real way to tell without taking them out. My bushings appeared good, but when I put new ones in, just because, my rattle went away and tightness returned to the car.

The wheel bearing is the grinding noise for sure.

The concept of bearing 'graunch' is entertaining. Why not change them just to nix the graunch.

I like the idea of swapping a wheel or two to see what happens. Not all cookie cutters are round and not all can be balanced. Can you swap in a set of wheels from a car with no vibration? I had a set of cookies that vibrated and there was no way to fix them. I changed wheels and everythying was fine from then on.

What do you mean the bushes are good? you assume they are good? if they dont look ripped that does not mean that they are good. take a closer look..if they look a little bit like old dog shit...then they are exactly that.

Rubber will bake and become much softer after a while...so replace your bushings anyway.

if the bearing is rattling the wheel will move when you lift the car.

I reckon the rattle is caused by the disk moving about and rattling the caliper as I suspect the inner bearing has collapsed.
Their is no noise or movement when the wheel is lifted of the ground though.
This passed an MOT like this and I can understand why the tester could not see anything amiss it is only apparent when you are driving the car and hard corner on left hand bends and putting excess pressure on it.
I will get the bearing ordered tomorrow!!!

A further question:- Do the bearing shells just knock out? Or is it more difficult than that?!!! Remembering I have alloy hubs...

The disk sits on the back of the hub...the bearings are inside the hub..the wheel alos sits on the outside of the hub....if the inner bearing is shot the whole wheel assy is moving(yes it would bang against the brake pads)...but you should be able to feel it by hand when you lift the car.

i think you would have significant crunch noise if the bearing would have collapsed. lift the car, pull the wheel and caliper, the bearing inspection is a 10 minute job.

replacement however...you need a hydraulic press and some tools.

I took the bearing out (luckily only the removeable part) only to find it was in perfect condition. So the bearing is nor the source of the graunching noise.
This was lucky as the bearing I was supplied is incorrect.
My car has the 5 bolt hub and my question is when swapping these over can you use the original 924 stub axles?
Because i think the bearings have been replaced.
All this hasn't done anything for the rattle and graunching.
The front wheel is nor catching on anything as it has wider arches and their is plenty room.

This is now driving me crazy.....I have replaced;-Complete strut assemblies Balljoints Brake springs The complete wishbones and bushes are new. The rollbar bushes are still tight. But it still rattles like the front OS suspension is falling of!! If I can't sort this soon it is going to have to go as rattles like this drive me nuts

Help what am I doing wrong, or what am I not seeing?

for starters..youre not listening to the advices given here.

what tires are you running..what pressures?
who replaced the struts? you? take the PET and make sure you installed all the parts in the correct order....and you tightened the bolts properly.

Sorry but I was almost 90% certain it was the wheel bearing (my mechanic friend also thought this).

The bearing was a cheap fix so isn't a problem.

I replaced the struts and have had it properly tracked and aligned again.

I try to do all my own maintenance as I do not trust garages as I had a very bad experience many years ago when a garage had replaced the complete drive shafts on my VW camper and had forgot to tighten ALL the driveshaft bolts, let us just say three people spent two weeks in hospital! They blamed the apprentice for forgetting to tighten them!!!!!!!!

The tyres are Nankang toursport and are new and balanced.
Wheels have been checked to be true and are well within tolerance.
Tye Pressures front 29 psi rear 36 psi.
I have swapped the front tyres to the back with no difference!
Everything and I mean everything is tight as it has all been checked at least 5 times now because I keep think I have forgot something!

I am running out of options as it sounds horrific and it is so noticable you can hear it from the outside of the car.
