Help needed from anyone who may possess a 951.
You may be aware a number of people on the board are experimenting with running the 951 turbo coldside and intermediate, married to a 931 hotside to form a hybrid turbo installation.
I've progressed to the point of motor and turbo installation but have hit a snag. The 951 intermediate has drilled and tapped fittings on the sides (one on the left, and two on the right) which take water lines and I believe a breather.
I have never seen a 951 up close, nor do I have access to one.

What I would dearly love to see are some pictures of the 951 turbo installation, to see where the lines route to. The 951 PET is hopeless in this regard. My gut feeling is that the single fitting on the left is the inlet, and the top fitting of the two on the right is the outlet.
Can any 951 owner confirm this? and where does the third fitting hook up to?

If perchance you are aware of the thread sizes of the fittings, that would be a huge bonus.

Cheers

Ugh, it has been a year since I had the turbo out on mine, rennlist or clarks would be a good place to ask. I dont remember a breather, I remember oil in and oil out, water in and water out. I also remember that due to some rusted bolts it was 2 days in coming out. Im thinking that the side that has two holes has a plug in the lower and a banjo in the upper and the other side has a j pipe screwed into it. Top and bottom are oil in and oil out. Dont quote me on that as I am speaking from a foggy memory.

Thanks Joe.....that's kind of how I envisaged it. So the bung must come from the factory? Curious.

A photo of a 951 turbo 'insitu' would suffice....if anybody can snap a piccie of their engine bay. I've never looked in the engine bay of a 951! Never been that close!

Cheers

As Joe said... The top and bottom are oil in and out.

The left side has the banjo bolt with plug below it.

The right side has a J-pipe that runs to the Aux water pump.

Wow. That's a thing!
Thanks for the piccie. Excuse my ignorance, but when you say left side, do you mean the left side, looking at the piccie, or the LHS of the vehicle.

When mounted in a 931, in the original turbo position, and to utilise existing oil lines, which is oil IN at the top, and oil OUT at the bottom (to sump), the orientation of the intermediate is such that the single fitting is on the LHS of the intermediate, closest to the block, while the two fittings are on the RHS of the intermediate, facing the RHS frame rail.

I was using left and right in reference to the picture...

Left is closest to the block in my description.

Hope that helps!

Thank you, thank you! That's great news.
So orientation on the 951 is identical to how it sits on the 931, albeit on the other side of the block. Now I need to figure out the size of the ports and find fittings. Crucially I now know which port is blocked.
Thank you again for all your efforts guys.

Cheers

*Incidentally, is that your motor? So nice and neat.....are the fittings anodised?

Great! I hope it works out.

Yep, that's the engine in my 924S.

Thanks, some of my parts have fresh yellow-zinc, while others are just painted to look anodized. The painted items turned out well, and seems to be pretty durable... so far. I originally wanted to re-zinc all the parts, (and still want to later on) but just felt that my effort would be better spent elsewhere at this time.

Here's another pic with my 'better' camera. The camera I used for the picture above doesn't really show the shine and color. In pictures it's difficult to tell which parts have yellow-zinc from the ones with paint, so this is roughly what the car looked like from the factory. I just hope it's not too gaudy.

Wow! That is bling! Love to see neat, clean, well maintained mechanicals.

So did you buy a front cut, or have you '951ised' the rest of the car as well? In any event, what a perfect sleeper! I just love it.

More piccies!!!!

The J-pipe connector is M16 x 1.25, I didn't measure the banjo bolt, but I think its the same size.

Nah, the engine was already pulled so I just went and picked it up.

The rest of car is still a 924S in every way... except that it has a turbo.

Here's my build thread for more pics:

Thank you again Ed. I'll get a bolt in M16 x 1.25 and try it for size.
That's an interesting photo just prior to the installation of the turbo, showing the placement of the banjo bolt. For my application I figure I'll need two of those, one for each side, due to restricted space. Next stop USA Ebay to acquire those. Thanks for the great pictures.

Somehow I missed the posts on your engine swap....what a huge undertaking....my hat off to you Sir! Not a job for the faint-hearted, particularly in the interface of 924S to 951 wiring.

Can't help but be mightily impressed with your engine bay....so clean and neat. Has the engine bay itself been repainted......hard to believe Guards Red can be so shiny after 20+ years of use!

As I said...great work. Love it.

Firstly, I can now confirm that the threaded fittings on the sides of the intermediate are M16 x 1.5. Bought the shortest bolts I could and tomorrow will have them machined to plug size, so that I can at least run up the new motor.
Still endeavouring to procur two of the banjo fittings used on the passenger side of the 951 application so that I can run water cooling through the turbo as intended. Due to severe space limitations I will have to run the inlet hose under the turbo, and then up via the banjo arrangement. The outlet can run either over or under the turbo, again via the banjo arrangement.

On closer inspection (with my strongest pair of glasses) I do indeed notice you have repainted the engine bay.

Thanks again for all your help fellas! Oh, and if anybody happens to have a water outlet banjo bolt and line lying around, I'm all for it.

Cheers Pete

Doh! You're right, I read the wrong mark on my gauge.

It wasn't as hard as it looks, and I actually found it quite enjoyable. Maybe something's wrong with me.

Yep, I repainted it while I had the engine out.

No problem, I hope it all works out for you.
