Take the LS6 out of your Silverado and drop it in there. _________________ '79 924 Supercharged / Track Prepared

| Audi inline five is probably the easiest choice but I bebeive you'd have to use a 944 tranny/torque tube so that would be fifty precent of you budget right there. If you want a badass swap check out this project. http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=37749 |

Instead of taking the long, expensive, painful road of grafting a different motor into the car, why not drop in a direct replacement from your rich parts pool? Enjoy the car in its original form before trying to make it something else? Believe it or not, even in its low HP form, these cars are really fun. Give it a try! Long block for, what, $500? _________________ '79 924 Supercharged / Track Prepared

Nope.
That's a 944 motor and won't directly bolt into your chassis without adding mounts for the engine.
The 924 2.0L uses the same bellhousing pattern as the Audi 5-cylinder and some of the V6 and V8 engines as well. The trick is that the SOHC 5-cylinder (most common) won't clear the shock tower, so you have to build a very short runner intake or use the DOHC motor. BTW, the DOHC turbo motor was used in the WRC Group B and other killer Audi race cars in the 80's and 90's, so power won't be a problem with proper tuning
The Oil pan may need to be modified to clear the cross member
The stock clutch will hold upwards of 200hp before slipping, maybe more depending on the type of power curve you have and how heavy the car is. The stock driveline won't take well to drag starts though so if you're planning on burnouts, etc then moving to a 944 torque tube and transaxle will help. Luckily you can re-use your stock bellhousing as it bolts to any of the TT's and you can change the clutch disc to a more common unit from a Ford, etc.
With all of that said, you'd be hard pressed to find and tune anything in that engine bay for less than $1K. I'd just pull the stock one down and put some new rings and bearing in it along with some fresh seals and get back to driving the car.
If you find you want more power, then build another motor up and gather the parts you need for the swap, make sure they are freshened and then dig into the swap after driving the car for a bit and figuring out that you want from it most. _________________ Stefan

By far the cheapest way to get more power for the 924 NA is to rebuild the existing power plant with 931 pistons. With the NA head, the S1 pistons will yield just shy of 10:1, and the S2 pistons will get close to 11:1.
While this won't do anything to fix the short comings of the NA head (small valves and poor flow), it should wake the motor up quite nicely, probably between 130-140BHP. That's near-931 performance (150/156 for US-spec S1/S2 respectively),and better than Euro NA performance (125BHP) for very low cost. About the only drawback to this approach is that it will result in an interference motor, but IMO that's really not a significant concern provided you keep up with proper maintenance on the timing belt and tensioner.
Nevertheless, it will be quite challenging to keep your basic rebuild cost under $1K. By the time you buy the head gasket and crankcase gasket kits, rings, bearings, machine the head, machine the block, replace bad hoses and clamps, get proper sealants, etc., you will be very close to $1K. And that's assuming you don't need to replace the guides or valves in your head.
Good luck. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |
