I defiantly won't be in any hurry, hwy driving is really annoying with the N/A box, so I'll just be taking my time. I hope to head out as late as possible so it will be cooler, but I'll try and stick to I85 so I can be found easier, should there be a problem. _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior

Car is packed and ready to go! I tested my spare tire, packed extra oil, coolant, and fuses. I'll be riding down alone, so I want to make sure I don't get stranded. I'll leave here around 3:30pm so I can take my time.
As far as the car goes, I took her out and flogged her today... It wasn't raining so there was no dripping water and the coolant level is now steady. I changed the oil a few weeks ago and it is still golden and very hard to see when checking... I haven't had to add a drop. It seems like my N/A oil turned black the second it touched the engine and was always needing to be topped off. When I took the old engine apart, everything seemed fine, but this engine, so far, has been great.
I also thought I'd mention that you should go back and check the head nuts and cam tower bolts after 800-1000 miles. Mine were still tight, but I've seen a few 944's get those cam tower bolts wedged in their cam, and it ain't pretty.
See some of you guys tomorrow! _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior

You swap is just as stunning in person as it is in the pictures. You just need to do something about that interior |

Yep, that's my next move. By next year I hope to have black leather seats, but I'm on my third dash... maybe we should create a kick-starter program to make fiberglass dashes that don't crack or melt for the 924's and early 944's. I don't like the leather covers. _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior

It was great meeting you guys! Hopefully, we can get together again soon.
My car made the trip without breaking a sweat! Although, I did have one scary moment where I thought I'd race JReece while still in 5th gear. This caused the DME to trigger overboost protection... needless to say I was startled when the car stalled and I had to pull over, which can be a hair raising experience in Atlanta traffic!
I only hit overboost protection randomly in 5th gear and think it's caused by a bad air flow meter... Anyway, the car did great otherwise, and I'll never try to race in 5th gear again...
[I edited it to make better sense] _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior

| The second weekend in November the wife and I will be hitting the Dragon Friday and head over to Gatlinburg Saturday/Sunday if anyone wants to join me. I have to get my coolant system ironed out and possible EFI conversion by then. |

That's too far off in the future for me to know if I'll be free that weekend, but it does give me plenty of time to make arrangements, and perhaps even get some friends onboard. _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior

lol, yeah that's what I get for trying to show off...
I was trying to see if I couldn't keep up/pass you without having to down-shift and it didn't work out so well.
But, in those other runs she looked pretty good, right? _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior

Today, I decided to mess with the AFM and see if I could re-calibrate it.
It appears that someone messed with the black dial on the AFM... this is a big no-no. I have been fighting a few issues since start-up, nothing serious, but I knew the AFM was the cause.
I was able to slowly notch through and improve the way the car ran... is it exact... perhaps not, but it's MUCH better! The only way I will ever have it fixed 100%, is to replace it, but it should be fine for now.
The Low end acceleration is now silky smooth and it takes very little effort to get the car moving... I even saw full boost ~2500 rpms on the stock tach... but best of all, I'm no longer hitting over-boost protection!
It was so rough on the highway that I felt like it needed another gear, but that roughness is now gone. Fuel consumption has also been improved, and idle is now at .5 gph as it should be... so I think it's set pretty close, or atleast I should be able to live with it now! _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior

Most of my friends aren't on car forums, and since most people out there probably aren't interested in sifting through a long thread to see the results, I made a short video.

If you are interested in seeing more pictures I have posted a link below. The photos are high-resolution and you can zoom in. I've even written a description for most.

The subject of "turboing your N/A" comes up a lot on other forums, and I just wanted to say that while this isn't the hardest swap; if you have to ask, you probably shouldn't.
When I set out to do this, I knew exactly what needed to be done. While, I would like to make this project easier for others, it will still require a very high skill level, which is likely beyond the scope of the average owner.
Of course, you can always go the cheap route and buy a 951 engine for $1,800. However, that is probably the most difficult, since you could end up doing all that work again in two weeks when a seal or bearing fails.
If you don't change everything or inspect the wiring and exhaust , then you'll have a nightmare on your hands.
I chose, the long and expensive route, but I hope to never touch it again. In fact, since fixing the oil leak, I've only had to tinker with AFM. Since fixing that two weeks ago, I've done nothing but check the oil every once in a while.
Before the swap, I was concerned that I might lose some of the reliability of the N/A, but that hasn't been the case. I still panic when something when I hear strange noises coming from other cars and I think it's mine, but I'm starting to get over it and beginning to realize that my car is now in much better condition than it was before with the N/A engine... and I would've driven that engine anywhere! _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior

Yea man, the other 10 times that you won all looked very nice from my view.
Given, when you stayed in fifth gear, I down-shifted to THIRD in that run, I didn't do that agian, lol. _________________ Thanks, JReece
