Thinking I might build a 924 GT or GTP etc clone of sorts. Want something different.
Stripped down Street Car.
Probably about 150-160 HP if NA.
Thinking a 2L 1978-1980 starter.
Questions....
Is a 924 like a 944 in that pulling the engine out the front is very difficult ?
I have read that the 931 stock head breaths better and the 931 trans can handle more power, so would I be better off starting with a Turbo car ?
Can I get to 150 HP NA with after market FI without spending a fortune ?
I have had electromotive on 2 different 928 turbo cars I built, but might try megasquirt.
If go turbo, it would be custom. As I said above I have built 2 928 turbos which are a lot more difficult so I can handle the fab work.
With a custom turbo setup is 200 HP 2L achievable at a moderate boost without doing a ton of head work ??
I know it would be easier just to drop in a 951 turbo engine, but just curious.

My bad. I have a home made flow bench ie non calibrated and today tested both a 931 and 40mm NA heads today in a much better fashion than my previous method where I had a 931 head perform much better than a NA head. I was wrong. They preformed essentially equally until you get over about a .400 inch lift where the NA head drops off and the 931 head keeps getting a little better. I'll write up my data hopefully tomorrow. _________________ Mike

I haven't pulled out the motor in one of these, but I don't think it would be too difficult. I believe you may have to drop the tranny though to move the torque tube back to get it out though...so yes, a little time consuming.
Considering that stock euro 924s had 125 horsepower, adding electronic fuel injection, perhaps putting in a hot cam and upping the compression ratio may get you 150 hp.
A custom turbo setup would be good as the stock ones weren't great (the turbos were only oil cooled, and are usually cooked after 30k miles when not using synthetic). Porsche was able to coax something like 375hp out of this engine I think, using what was essentially the same block and head (?) as the Turbo model. Plus the Carrera GT models were putting out 210 stock, so you should have no problem reaching that number or more, I'd assume.
I wonder how hard it would be to make use of the 8000 rpm tach to its full potential? I like the sound of the engine at high revs, but would love to hear what it sounds like wailing to some ridiculously high rpm safely. _________________ 1977 Porsche 924 - sold

Its not hard to take the engine out, its easyer than the 944.
200 HP out of the turbo? you can get that if you just add an intercooler and do a bit of port matching on the intake manifold...ok maybe a slight increase in boost..but not much needed.
The exhaust has port rings so no work needed.
Moderate power increase out of the turbo is EASY.
There are ways to mod the NA too...some tried.
In my opinion the most effective way is to really upp the CR.
I dont have experience in modding the 924 NA, but i've been closely waching a 1.6L VW engine on a single carb that made HUGE power gains just by upping the CR and using high octane fuel.

+1
To do a GT, GTS or GTR clone, I would use a 931 body and engine like Porsche did.
For a GTP, I would simply buy a 951 and add rear GTP flare and a hood scoop.
If you are in the US (no location info?) getting an N/A 110-115hp to reach 150-160hp will not be easy without major investment. _________________ 1976 924 N/A ROW SOLD
