Hi guys, I'm stuck. Starting at 9am today, I wrestled my torque tube back into place. Attached it to the bell housing, jacked and wrestled the transaxle back into place and bolted it up. Now I'm stuck getting the rear suspension back into place. I had unbolted it to lower the torsion carrier to get the torque tube out. Now I am having difficulties getting it back into place.

It is like it has rotated and the bolt holes don't line up. This is the early style where there are two bolts on each side just in front of the rear wheels that hold it to the body. The only other attachment point is the rear shocks.

I have tried jacking the beam, supporting the body, jacking the body, supporting the beam, prying the wheels forward, unbolting the shocks. If you were to look at the drivers side rear wheel, the beam is rotated counter clock wise so the forward bolt is too far away to get lined up, but the rear bolt mount is touching the body.
Any ideas? With just new axles and the muffler left, the car will be back together from being torn apart all summer while having new torque tube Superbearings built by Black Sea R&D.

P.S. I have the Haynes manual in front of me, the 924 Tech section open and two 924board screens open with searches going.

I think what I did was to use wood blocks to hold it in place away from the outside and then use the jack to rotate it to get it at the right angle. Been a while, but I remember it getting pretty ugly and congested under there. Hope this helps.

Use a BFH to slightly widen the bracket on the tub that those bushings go into, and then put some rubber safe lube (like Sil-glyde) on the bushings.

You should then be able to jack it up into place.

The later style are easier.

On mine, I was able to raise one side up and get it close and work on getting the other side up and in. Getting the banana arms aligned took a bit of work since one was bent slightly from leaning it one side.

I think that I used blocks on each side so that it was about wedged in position, but still able to slide it back and forth on the blocks for precise positioning and then put the floor jack under the carrier center casting to help it rotate. If you get the back (higher) end of the bracket touching the body and then jack the center it should rotate in to position.

Amend that, Haynes manual calls it late-style on page 224.
No bushings or banana arms involved.
It's the very first style, you know, the Before Christ one.
MikeJinCo, do you remember if the cars weight was on the tires, or body on jackstands, shocks on or off.

The car was on jack stands and I really had it fairly high. Shocks were off the car completely. I did have the hubs/brakes on the trailing arms. I may have gotten some longer 12mm bolts to try to help align it, that one I can't remember. I have looked thru my pictures and don't have anything that applies, I'll look again.

Got it together last Thursday night. Used ratchet straps to pull the beam forward, lots of pushing and pulling got it lined up. Then realized the threads on a couple bolts were stretched, grrr. Got it bolted in, shocks bolted up, axles in, exhaust on, and.... car wont start.

So the car cranks, fires, then dies. And the fuel pump stays on after turning the key off. So then I reach under the dash and just have to touch the relay and the pump shuts off. Turn the key again and repeat the whole thing over again. Took the fuel line off the filter and cranked it and fuel comes out. I'll find another relay but something tells me that isn't it.

New switch didn't solve it, at least now I know that is replaced too. Still no start: starts, wont idle, dies, repeat. Fuel pump relay stays on every couple tries till I touch it and it quits buzzing. I guess I'm working on a fuel/air/spark/wur/924/etc.. problem.

I guess I should amend that. Car will start if I give it the gas mid crank. Then I can rev it up to whatever. If I hold it at about 2k it runs and pops like it is missing. Then I change the rpm's and it will do the same(run pop pop run). But if I take my foot off the gas, it will slow down and shut off, no stop at idle.

I am just used to the original starting procedure, get in, crank crank, start and idle. What's changed?

Sounds like you need to do the standard troubleshooting tests for the fuel system.

Might be your WUR, but it's a guessing game unless you do some troubleshooting.

You might have dislodged some gunk in your gas tank with your work that has clogged your fuel filter, or any number of other issues.

Sounds lean. . .check fuel pressure and volume to start.

Hello everyone,

i think we have to get some things sorted.

What you americans call the torque tube is actually the transaxle.
I know most of us dont speak latin.
What you, and also some gurus on the board call the transaxle is the transmission gearbox.

On an early car that is lifted off the ground, the transaxle is under tension.
If you support the engine on the right side it gets easier to disassemble the transaxle from the engine.When you reinstall it (Lifted) make sure you dont torque down all the screws to the max! Only finger tight - then put the car on wheels and tighten everything down.
If you dont work that way you can get even a disalignment of the ignition and a failure to start.

captain, check if you get the car in all gears with the clutch easy.-
If so, check ignition timing again properly.
