|
|
Hi All!
I realize there`s tons of stuff already on the forum regarding what strut inserts/shock absorbers to use for every purpose and budget, all with the intent to get the most bang for the buck (at least for economy minded people like myself).
But please bear with me as i hope to try to get the most bang for the buck (decent road performance and more importantly longevity in this case), which is not easy in my part of the world...
I am choosing between having to import 924 specific KYB`s GR-2 gas front strut inserts (less than US$40 each + shipping), or buying locally available NOS Koni front strut inserts (i assume the NON-gas type) from the 1970`s that cost the equivalent of US$58 each, but supposedly sold as an aftermarket strut for a VW super beetle 1302/3.
Obviously i would prefer Konis made to take the weight of my 924 front mounted engine vs the VW beetle`s much lighter engineless front for performance and longevity.
I`m more concerned here with longevity though. Sorry, cant give you a part number as the seller is unable to give me the part number over the phone, so i have to check it out myself.
I checked online and only found info for the new koni`s. I`ve bought NOS stuff from this seller in the past with no problem btw.
I mean, are there "low end" (as in just moderately good, at least as compared to the KYB GR-2) Konis from that period, might even be from the early 1980`s ??
Anyone here used aftermarket VW front strut inserts for your 924? Did they last? Thank You!

GR-2's don't last very long, nor do they provide the damping of a Koni.
I would lean towards the Koni's, Bilsteins or a set of Boge inserts before going with the GR-2's. _________________ Stefan

KYB's also don't take well to 325lb/in springs either _________________ Stefan

I had a set of KYB's on SONIC for 6 years and had no problems with them for street driving (daily driver at that). For the money, I don't think they're that bad. That said, if the Konis are available locally without importing, that is the route I would take. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Thanks for the responses guys! I do have KYB`s on the rear and had them on my 914-4 back in the 80`s as a daily driver.
So i guess that a locally available $58 fluid-filled nos KONI insert designed for the light engineless front of a vw beetle would be a better "risk" than new $40 GR-2 inserts designed for the much heavier front of a 924 (at least from the point of longevity) ? _________________ 1979 924 U.S. version

I had KYB in the past as well. Today's are not the same build quality. . .they don't last for nothin'.
As for the Beetle Koni, you already know the problem. . .they won't be valved properly for the toofah spring rate.
If you must go cheap, Sachs (OEM supplier for most toofahs) is as low as I would go. List is high, reseller cost not so much. Look around. . .maybe you can find a deal. _________________ Toofah King Bad

I don't know jack sh*t about suspension but the guy below was the PO of my car the inserts he used seem fine for weekend joyriding.
