Posted: Sat Dec 21, 2013 5:07 pm Post subject: Rad hose NLA any ideas |
|
|
I was playing around the wiring for the alternator looking to get it in order from what i can tell there is a thin wire that goes to a small post on the alt (D+?) and a thick one that comes from the starter and goes to a thick post (B+?) and then I am guessing that there should be an earth to the housing or something which is not there. Anyway, this is not my issue right now.
Whilst looking at the wires I noticed that the rad hose running from the water pump to the thermostat housing has a kink in it so I investigate further. It is just a standard straight hose not molded. However the PET (thanks whoever pointed me to that in my last post) it is molded. Some further investigation and I find out that this hose is NLA.
I am guessing that this kink could be part of the reason why the head gasket went initially (before my time). I also noticed that the upper rad hose is supposed to have a bleed plug and mine does not, so I was thinking it is also possible that the system had air in it before my time also.
So two questions here. Does anyone have a solution for the WP to TH hose? and whilst I think it should be possible to bleed the cooling system without the upper hose plug, is this true or is this system really hard to bleed for some reason?
Thanks again |

I don't know which car you have - you need to add it to your sig.
But on the 2.0L cars for sure, there is a ground strap directly from the alternator case to the block or intake.
Bleed must indeed be in the hose. Does this mean you have an NA?
I'm trying to picture a hose that goes from the water pump to the thermostat - but I'm not coming up with one, not for the 2.0L car.
Got a picture? _________________ Vaughan Scott

There is indeed a small crooked hose that goes from the top of the water pump to the underside of the t-stat housing, and it is NLA. There is nothing magical about the kink in the hose, so if you get a standard length of heater hose in the suitable diameter, cut it to length, and you should be able to get it to work. I don't see any reason that this would cause the head not to seal or the gasket to blow.
The bleeder hose is required, and if not bled properly, this is much more likely to be the cause of overheating and eventual head gasket failure. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

I bought both of those hoses new from AutoHausAZ a couple years ago.
Kinda surprised that the short one is NLA. When did that occur? _________________ 1987 924S SPEC car

I may be wrong but I believe they have been recently acquired from OPC in the UK so may not be NLA _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife

Oh, that tiny little one? Yeah agreed that shouldn't much cause any overheating. Seems like the primary water flow is from the pump into the block, then back up to the head, then out... _________________ Vaughan Scott

046 121 053 is the hose in question, and it has been NLA for over year from Porsche, Porsche dealers, and all aftermarket suppliers this side of the pond. Any that are found are likely to be remnant stock, so if you see 'em snap 'em up or let me know and I'll buy the lot to put onto the shelf. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

| yeah sorry I dont think I quite explained it correctly. You guys have the right hose but on my car it had been replaced with standard straight hose and it was bent blocking off quite a bit of water flow. Given that you guys reckon that you can use standard straight hose then it may have just been cut too short and collapsed on it self. It just look to me like the way it was water flow would have been reduced quite a bit and that is why I thought it could have been part of the head cause. Anyway I will look into further so thanks. |

I just checked and I bought one back in Feb 2011. It is no longer listed at the place I bought from. I just threw away 2 of these too, when I junked the '78 race car... _________________ 1987 924S SPEC car
