Getting started on resealing the '88 924S engine for the track car. Pulled the head today, and am quite concerned about the condition of the original head gasket. Compared to the 2.0L engine, the water jackets are quite large. And, from the photos, you'll see that some of the gasket is missing. I noticed a buildup of something at the thermostat, and think it could be part of the missing head gasket material. The cylinder bores are perfect, some oil in the oil cooler, have a pic of that. Is this OEM head gasket condition sorta normal? About 95,000 miles on the engine.

some of the missing material fell off as I removed HG.

Gasket looks ok, but that looks like oil + coolant milkshake. Did you find anymore of this in the coolant tank or oil pan?

no, the coolant came out clear, and no milkshake oil in the pan. Pulled the number two rod bearing, and it looks perfect.

Bores are smooth, no scratches.

Then that gunk is probably due to poor maintenance of the cooling system.
