Slowly getting the car to where I really want it. Now the big thing is the Gear shift. It is loose and wobbles around like nobody's business. No matter what gear I am in, there is about an inch of play. I want to tighten this up and make it better. So talking to my dad, who is a local Porsche guru here in Ottawa, he said that there is a bold that holds the gear shift lever in, and if it is not a special bolt this scenario will happen. Is this true? If it is where do I get said bolt. Because once I get the new bolt in, if I still have the problem I will be pulling the gear shift out and making a nice new bushing for it. _________________ Cheers;

There are several posts in the How To section on fixes. On mine the hole thru the shift lever was worn as well as the pin so I drilled it out and put some plastic bushings on it with a new bolt. Problem gone. _________________ Mike

You've got the audi gearbox, correct? If so, the shift lever itself is likely worn out.

I had to repair the shifter in my 951, I cut the worn pin off the lever, drilled that spot for a 10mm threaded hole, tapped it and put a 10mm bolt in place of the pin with a jam nut and loctite to hold it all in place. Later I added a pair of 10mm thrust bearings to help improve the feel.

The thrust bearings are cheap and available from Amazon for about $7/ea.:

Or you can buy the Only944.com shift lever for $50, which is a drop-in and ready to go solution, that includes the thrust bearings and a slightly shorter throw:

If you have the Porsche (snailshell) gearbox then the bushings in the rear "knuckle" are likely gone and need to be replaced. They are 914 shift linkage bushings and quite cheap, not terribly easy to replace, but once done you'll be good to go for quite a while. _________________ Stefan

Shift lever is the same. You have nearly the same gearbox as the later Audi 5-speed just minus a gear. An Audi 5-speed from another 924 NA would bolt right up (though the extra length for 5th gear might hit the tank). The shift lever arm is different length but the shift lever itself is the same.
Either way, the failure mode and repair are the same for the shift lever no matter what. _________________ Stefan
