My '77 has a rainbow crack at the bottom of the windshield that's about 16 inches from end to end. Has anyone here ever used Safelite for a replacement? If so, did you pay it out of pocket or did your insurance cover it. The vehicle is under a Hagerty policy right now and I need to call them this week to see if I need to pay a deductible to have it done or it's different.

I'd fit a 944 flush windshield, personally. Either way safelite should be fine.

I've used SafeLite on multiple cars (928 and 924s, plus my 3 series and my daughter's PT Cruiser). I've always been happy with their service and prices.

To use the flush mount 944 glass, there are several additional parts you will need that don't come stock on early 924, and Safelite won't provide them, so you'll need to source them separately ahead of time, and then convince them that you have all the parts and that they'll work. They may be reluctant to warranty the repair.

There isn't really anything that you need for the late glass. The only extra part is the rubber trim piece and the glass company should supply that anyway. You do need to cut off the little tabs that hols the window trim though. The late glass will not fit otherwise.

I put a late windshield in mine. As long as you get the late glass and not the glass for 85.5-86. This glass needs a spacer channel that is NLA. The later glass has a thick rubber part bonded to the glass that spaces it higher.

Ahhh. Looking in PET it appears to be separate parts, I must have been thinking of the 85.5-86 glass, and frankly, didn't realize there was a difference in the 87-onward. Thanks for the clarification. If the 87 glass comes with the bonded piece, absolutely agree, that would be the way to go. Cutting off those little tabs should hard to do as long as you have it done before they arrive.

Late glass is cheaper too. $268.95 for 1987 944 windshield, $298.95 for 1979 924 windshield.

If I don't beat you to it, since my 924 needs a windshield as well.

Anyone want to buy a modified 951S?

Is the late windshield bonded in with urethane or does it use a rubber piece (like the quarter windows)?

No and No. The first is an early glass. I originally tried to buy mine from them but found out that it is the early type. The second if for 85.5-86. This one uses the spacer channel that is NLA.

The late (97 and up) glass has a thick rubber piece bonded to the glass and it gets installed with urethane windshield adhesive. Not the stuff that you can get at Advance auto -- 3M 08609. This is not the structural type. The windshield is part of the roof structure (roll protection) so you need the correct type. 3M 08693 urethane adhesive and 08681 primer. The adhesive is about $17-18 and the primer is around $30. I bought mine on E-bay. 1 tube is more than enough for the job and you just need a regular caulking gun.
