Reminds me to ask about this...

Whats up with these top strut mounts? Are they installed incorrectly? There is some rubber ring floating around under the metal purch top covers under the shaft nut.. In the pic you can see how they have rings under them that are just there flopping around...

The suspension makes no noise and tracks just fine, goes straight...

Apart and back together on one side adding a spacer it does keep the top spring perch off of the mount but it does nothing for the gap in the rubbers, where it sticks up on top..
But the rubbers look good actually, they don't seem degraded..

Both sides done with spacers the factory calls for..

Porsche specifies that a 6mm spacer/washer be added to teh strut assembly between the upper spring perch, and the upper strut bearing/bushing. If the car does not have the spacers (you have to install them on both sides), you need to get them from Porsche, before you go to the trouble to replace the upper mount, since you have to release the spring, and drop the top of the strut anyway.

The spacer helps keep the upper spring perch from grinding on the upper strut mount when the rubber bushing wears, and collapses.

I used a fat SK tools 3/8 extension through the top, through all the pieces to line em all up. I somehow managed to pull this all off with a jack by myself.. You have to pull the sway bar mounts off the control arms for them to drop enough to get the top strut parts out, took 3 hours while posting and a bit of sitting talking, not too bad of a little job..
Good thing the shocks are still alive enough to expand on there own or I would have needed a spring compressor..
I'm going to add these top mount rubbers to the long list of things I'd like to replace..

Are Koni's designated by tape around the top of the strut housing?

Good info and some detailed pics for future reference.

I used the Fox strut mounts mentioned in the above thread, they are cheap and they worked.

I dont think there is supposed to be that gap. My strut mounts are fairly new and always look like the picture you posted with the wheels off the ground, even if my car is not jacked up.

Could the rubber strut mount be collapsed causing the movement?

Hmm IDK but I think I need, camber plates, a coil over kit, dual rate springs with hats, and bump stops to solve this issue...

(if you haven't came across this thread yet I highly recommend it)

Or maybe just the rubbers between the bearings and mount plate..
